Early Voyages omnibus

8of5

I just discovered something exciting on Amazon UK. It appears that next May IDW will be publishing an omnibus book of Early Voyages comics, a 436 page book with the entire series! WOW! (Amazon page)

Even though I already own the series as individual books, and now digitally thanks to GIT, I find this very tempting...

Just in time for the movie! I wonder if the omnibus will reveal how the final storyline would have been resolved.

Even if it doesn't, this is going to be a worthwhile purchase. :)

I read an interview with the editor of that series once, where he said that when they found out the storyline was being canned midstream, it wasn't even possible to print a one page synopsis, summing up how the story would have unfolded, without the whole thing going back through Paula Block's consultation process - and if they didn't got to press right then, even that issue wouldn't have happened.

My recollection is much the same as yours, Ian.

I remember that, at the time, John Ordover suggested that the story might be completed in a novel, but after a few years I gave up waiting for it. :)

I still want to get the CD collection of all the Trek comics (minus IDW) that came out not too long ago, but I will definitely pick this one up because there's nothing like holding a book in your hand and flipping the pages.

This was the only comic that I picked up every month when Marvel put out those Paramount Comics. The rest where just "meh" for me.

I'm personally hoping for one of two things.

1: IDW produced a one shot final issue of the series and will include it in the ominbus.

2: IDW will use this as a launching point to start their own miniseries of Pike stories, with the conclusion of the cliffhanger as the beginning of the first issue.:drool::drool:

Me too, a couple of pages filling in the blanks and tying up the loose ends would do nicely.

They've not done a miniseries yet, but IDW certainly aren't short of love for Pike; two of the Alien Spotlight issues were Pike-centric, the recent Mirror Image series had a lot of mirror Pike, and next year's Crew miniseries will probably have Pike in it towards the end.

Do we know for a fact that this is legit, and not just another one of the made up books that seem to pop up on the Amazons from time to time? Because if it is legit, then I will try very hard to get it.

When ISBNs and actual page counts are announced, it's usually legit. Sometimes a book ISBN is announced, and the book ends up being cancelled, but Amazon is hardly going to make this still up.

I don't see this on the US Amazon site. Is there any reason why this would be released in the UK before the US?

I think that's just an instance of information arbitrarily percolating through one website before another.

I once swore that, despite owning all of the constituent comics, I'd buy this if it came out. So I guess I'm stuck.

^ That'll teach you to swear.

Also, Amazon UK's track record, in a word, sucks donkey balls. So I ain't gonna believe this is real until I hear it from a more reputable source -- like the Weekly World News.

The notes for this publication talk about it containing all "17 issues" and that's all that Marvel released...

I've contacted m'colleague Dan Abnett, the writer of Early Voyages, about this. I'll let you know what he says...

I'm pretty sure most of IDW's Archives were first "announced" via Amazon US or UK, and the track record's been good so far.

Has anyone received any of these yet? Best of the Borg is on its way to me, but I don't have it yet.

None of the ones so far have really appealed to me (especially since the DVD collection), I'd be quite interested to know if IDW put in any "extra features" such as interviews, like the Titan reprints sometimes had, as some sort of indication of a precedent for a possibly commentary on the conclusion of the series in this book.

I have both "The Best of Peter David" and "The Best of the Borg" and the only "extra" stuff seems to be a credits page, and the repeated use of a divider page between issues.

The glossy main pages are high resolution scans of comic book pages, so they (like "The Key Collection" reprints of Gold Key's TOS) have a very different feel to the old, original DC Comics reprint omnibuses (which sometimes even recoloured from original b/w artwork) - the divider pages reuse a newly-configured piece of vintage starship artwork on a new background.

Ian, since you have them, you can probably answer this. :) Is it true that IDW's Omnibi editions (which I've not seen personally) are in a smaller size than the standard comic size? I know that Dark Horse publishes their omnibi in a manga-ish size, and I was curious if IDW did the same.

Actually, I checked my mail this afternoon, and Best of the Borg was there. It's the same size as IDW's other trades.

I'm sort of amused by how the DC logo has been replaced with a black circle on all of the cover reproductions.
