Cast each other's fanfic characters?

Nerys Ghemor

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Just like how they have the Cast the Treklit characters thread over in the Treklit section, I thought this might be fun...

Who would you have play the characters you've seen here in the fanfic section?

(This, of course, applies to non-canon characters, not characters seen on the show making an appearance in somebody series.)

While I don't tend to get a very good picture of most characters even when authors describe them, here's one I always get in my head...

I know, I KNOW he can't be Tolian Soran's twin. But it's always Malcolm McDowell I picture when I read about Pava Lar'ragos.

That... is a very tough question! I picture characters pretty easily in my mind, so it's hard for me to actually find an actor that fits my mental image. But I see Pava being tough, darker-skinned and not all that old looking, maybe somewhere in his thirties.

Wow… Malcolm McDowell? I’ve never pictured Pava looking like that!

It’s always a kick to read how others view your characters. :) Strangely, the image in my mind’s-eye of Lar’ragos has always been rather vague, and I’ve never found an actor/model that I thought really defined his look.

Just from body-type (size, though Pava’s not as muscular) and attitude, the closest thing I’ve found would be Daniel Craig. That cold indifference that he’s mastered for the role of Bond is very evocative of Lar’ragos.

Seriously? Daniel Craig is like, the polar opposite of what I see in my head!!

This is totally why I draw (or try to) my OCs. ::laughs:: So much easier than trying to describe them in-story.

I was suggesting more the character's demeanor, rather than physical resemblance. :)

I wouldn't be very good at this game. I do prefer not to associate well known actors with OC Trek characters. I always thought that if you force a particular image of a character into the reader's mind you won't be able to avoid certain preconceptions to go along with that.

I also think it takes something away from the characters if they look like Tom Cruise or Sean Connery. In my mind they all have unique faces. They're characters, not actors.

If they were to adapt a fanfic for the screen and you have tons of money then of course you start thinking. But most screenwriters who love their characters don't want famous stars to play them. It's of course the money men and those concerned with box office receipts who are looking for an actor who will draw in audiences.

Hey, but that's just me being a spoil sport again. Feel free to ignore my post.

I can see Darkush's Glovers being played by Morgan Freeman (Samson) and Denzel Washington (Terence), with Mendez being Kim Kardashian.

I always saw Pava with Matthew McConaughey looks with Matt Damon's ruthlessness and compassion as portrayed in the Bourne films.

I try to cast everything I read in my head, but it doesn't always work. For instance, I keep having problems casting Joseph Akinola from Bluefin because my first instinct choice - Chiwitel Ejiofore - is too young, as I've realized from paying attention to TLR's descriptions. The best I can manage is an old Ejiofore. [shrug]

For now, I'll try a few from Gibraltar:

Captain Sandhurst - Clive Owen
(This was something G mentioned to me once as someone he might like, but he was reluctant. I think it's a great choice.)

Commander Ramirez - Rosario Dawson
(Because who wouldn't want Rosario Dawson starring in their show?)

Commander Ramirez (Alternate) - Roxanne Dawson
(Actually my first instinct choice, B'Elanna without the Klingon make-up)

Lieutenant Commander Pava La'aragos - Liev Shreiber
(He used to look young enough to be long-lived but old enough to have been there and done that. He's your man.)

Lieutenant Commander Pell Ojana - ?
(The originator of this character mentioned he thought of Connie Nielsen. When I shamelessly stole her for one of my fics, I pictured Emma Caulfield. I'm not sure either is right.)

Pretty interesting ideas. Actually the images for all three have shifted over time.

Originally Tony Todd was my model for Terrence and Louis Gossett Jr. was for Samson. Kenya Moore (former Miss USA) was my model for Jasmine.

Over time, I've come to see Roger Curtis (24's Curtis Manning) as Terrence and Danny Glover as Samson. Briefly I thought about Stacey Dash (http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=stacey+dash&btnG=Search+Images&gbv=2). I've always had a thing for Ms. Dash.

But for the most part I've kept the idea of Kenya Moore because how could I say no to this face: http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images;_ylt=A0geu7Im_TJJQVkA5sdXNyoA?ei=UTF-8&p=kenya%20moore&sado=1&fr2=tab-web&fr=yfp-t-815-s

As for Pell, Admiral's pretty good. Connie Nielsen was the original inspiration for how I saw Pell. I loved her in Gladiator. But after X-Men 3 I saw Famke Janssen as Pell, based partly on her long legged seduction of Wolverine in that movie. I was writing "The Crucible" at that time and I definitely saw Famke when I was writing the Mirror Universe Pell.

Other inspirations (Some of these have shifted over time as well):

Ivan Cherenkov: Daniel Craig
Tai Donar: Temeura Morrison or Dave Batista (WWE)
Juanita Rojas: America Ferrera or Michelle Rodiguez
Pedro Rojas: David Zayas
Sabrina Diaz: Shohreh Aghdashloo
Nandali Kojo: Mariza (http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images?p=mariza&fr=yfp-t-815&toggle=1&cop=mss&ei=UTF-8)

I had one that I thought about. Though Gibraltar sees Clive Owen when he writes Captain Sandhurst whenever I've gotten the opportunity to write him I saw him as Aaron Douglas (Chief Tyrol from BSG). Sandhurst always came across as more of an Everyman type guy/captain to me, but that's our little secret.

Xeris, thanks for mentioning Kim Kardashian. Now I've got to find a character to fit her.

save everyone time. and be sure to click for the next page :bolian:

Isn't Lena Heady a little--well--girly to be Bobbi March?

I always imagined March was a lot tougher-looking--butch, unglamorous, even a bit plain.

I can't think of an actress who qualifies. Someone who looks like a real soldier--like Anna Yegorova, female commander of an Il-2 Shturmovik squadron during WWII and Hero of the Soviet Union.

I think it's just the "El-Aurian nutjob" profile he has. ;)

Many of my own characters I haven't been able to cast--even though I can see them quite clearly in my mind. Spirodopoulos in particular, I could see well enough to sketch him, but I still can't seem to figure out who would play him.

The ones I HAVE cast successfully:

Gul Berat: Cal Ripken, Jr. (No one else has those eyes! He also seems, from what I know, to have a personality not unlike Berat's.)

Gul Speros: David Spade. MAJOR change with the makeup, but still.

Riyăk Iymender: possibly Matthew Gubler, or Justin Long. Not sure which yet.

Dr. Istep looks like my boss. I can't put a pic of him here...but he does. ;)

fuck, no. you seen T:SCC? she's butch there, but she's also feminine enough that Harry would fall for her in that dress in Someone To Love

I'm thinking of Joseph Akinola-I keep picturing the guy who played the commodore on Space:Above and Beyond-he was the Admiral in the Voyager episode about the fluidic space creatures building a mock-up of Starfleet Command....and played David Bendowi on Bab5....

As for his uptight Germanic First-the gal who plays Cameran(?) on HOUSE springs to mind...

And the (former) Vulcan with feelings-Lily Rush from COLD CASE, but with black hair.

I'm so bad with names-so many fanfics, so little short-term memory.......

I can't picture anyone for Solly Brin-unless Bruce Willis and Lou Ferrigno got together and had a red baby.:guffaw:

The reaction is understandable. That woman is seriously beauty challenged. Standard Hollywood rules, people. Ugly faces need not apply.

It's funny, but I've pictured Tucker Smallwood as Samson Glover. I've always pictured Morgan Freeman as Akinola, mainly because of his voice.

Gibraltar, I have to agree with Nerys Ghemor - I also picture Malcolm McDowell as Pava. I can easily see him biting the antenna off an Andorian.

Generally speaking, though, I don't really have any particular actors in mind when I read your various stories, though I definitely do have ideas of how your characters appear. The same is true for my own characters - I know what they look like, but they don't necessarily resemble any particular actors.
The only exceptions are Akinola portrayed by Morgan Freeman (that voice . . .) and Dr. Castille portrayed by Miguel Ferrer.
