Uniform question

You know the normal ST's have the three colours, teal-gold-red.

Why is it archer wears gold when the captain usually wears read? gold is operations?

This was the one where some 400 year old alien who got expulsion from his home world due to him being telepathic.

Actually originally Gold = Command, Red = Operations it changed in TNG.

I'm not looking for a convoluted in-story explanation, but from the p.o.v of directing the show.

Does red feel more like an executive colour?
Does gold feel more appropriate for regal authority?

I believe they tested TNG with Paddy Stewart in the gold, but it didn't look right, and he looked better and more suitable in red, so they just changed them round.

i thought i read somewhere that Red seemed more authoritative. i know they switched from the early-TNG spandex to real cloth because the cast complained (and it wasn't that flattering imo), esp Stewart, whose chiropractor said it was hurting his spine. GR apparently envisioned future clothes as being seamless, zipperless, etc "perfect fit" kinda

I wish some of that test footage or stills existed of that. It would be interesting to see the direction not taken.

Blue became teal to avoid the blue of bluescreen technology. Red was shifted down the olour scale to wine. Green/gold was shifted to mustard.

Similar to the Stewart tests, they experimented with various colours on Data. His makeup looked bad in the teal/blue, so his science role (ie. Spock replacement) took a back seat to his operations role.

The command switch to a wine red for Picard on TNG was also deemed acceptable because the movies had already enabled the public to associate Admiral Kirk and Captain Spock in wine red uniforms while in command.

I liked how the uniforms were all 95% the same except for the pips and color stripes. It seemed a bit more genuine with the period. While some may have had complaints, I thought the uniforms on ENT were spot on. They looked both neat and workaday at the same time, and the patches conveyed that they were all part of a single organization. If you have ever seen one up close, there is a ton of detail that did not come through on the screen with regards to the patches, zippers, pockets, etc. They are second in my mind in coolness only to the TOS outfits.

I think they were too damn tight, but otherwise pretty good uniforms obviously patterened after the generic NASA style flight suits of the last decade or two. The only thing it was really missing was more mission patches - this was remedied at the end of the series (adding name tags and useless epaulets while they were at it) but overall a very serviceable uniform.

ENT reverted to the uniform department color coding seen on TOS.

Gold = command division
Blue = sciences/medical
Red = engineering/ship's services and security

I love the Enterprise uniforms. It's probably the only one from Star Trek, I'd give serious consideration to turning up to a convention in.

Frankly, people just point and laugh at the others, especially when I'm changing the oil on my car...

I agree with those who think the department piping and stripes should have been brighter and easier to see. Whenever Hoshi was in uniform you could barely make out the blue piping on her jumpsuit. It tended to almost disappear into the darker background.

They needed more 'option' uniforms ala TMP or the real space program or military. The most common uniform complaint I have with almost all Trek is that everyone looks like they wear the same clothes ALL the time. Boring dramatically. Boring realistically. See TMP for good use of uniform options.

I wish the engineering deck would have had different work outfits than just the standard uniforms with red piping. TOS and the Kirk-era movies have all had specialized engineering outfits of one design or another, even if they were just colored jumpsuits with black tees underneath.
