Data and Seven...

2 of 10

Captain

Just finished "Nemisis" in the one of the final scenes Pickard is trying to explain to the other Data, how our Data spent so much time trying to become more human, seeing if it was possible to become as human as possible. It totally reminded me about Seven's own quest to learn about humanity, and even though she was human, most of what she ever knew was about the collective. In the final analysis, was her quest all that different from Data's...

On the face of it, they're paths are quite similar, but I always got the impression from Seven that she resisted becoming human, for fear of being imperfect. She has no desire to return to the Borg, but does this mean she necessarily wants to become human?

I only really remember a couple of instances (the holo-Chakotay being the most obvious one) where she actively tried to be more human.

Data on the other hand was eager to be more like his human companions, he had ambitions to be more than his programming, and actively imitated human behaviour.

There are similarites, but the path each of them takes is very different.

That's interesting. At the end of Nemesis I wasn't thinking of Voyager at all.

Did anyone else immediately think the thread title was sexual in nature??

Maybe I'm just a dirty old man. With x rated images of busty Borg and androids dancing in his head.

There's worse things in the world than D/7 ;)

Hold on... that's a battlecruiser isn't it? I vote against this relationship! :shifty:

I wonder why Data would bother to strive to become more human. What's wrong with being an android?

Yes, but only because the last thread I read was "Odd Couples."

I've been rewatching Voyager lately so it's fresh in my mind. Seven and Data are similar but there are differences: Seven used to be (fully) human while Data never was, so she doesn't wonder what it's like to be human. She also has more doubt about humanity than Data and isn't interested in taking up hobbies.

If anything, I think the Doctor is more similar to Data. Seven is more like a cross between Spock and Odo.
