So whats the verdict on the barcode scanners?

and duct tape lol

If they serve a function there's no problem. It fits the rest of th look of the bridge and doesn't strike me as too different from using Burke chairs on the bridge in TOS.

I don't ave a problem with set designers using "found items" (i.e. the barcode scanners) -- this is a common practice in film making, so why would this film be any different?

The duct tape -- or perhaps ductanium tape -- is for sealing up the cardboard box after Chekov checks out your new Wii at his electronic cash register, using the bar code scanners.

It's all very simple.

I didn't really catch them as barcode scanners. They looked like high-tech throttles or joysticks or something.

Nice catch! I would be very happy if they still use duck tape even 350 years from now.

It's like the bird feeders that they improvised into the borg deflector device in First Contact. There was an article about it in Star Trek the magazine.

The ones on the back 'hostess' stations there are also symbol barcode scanners similar to the LS 1900 line (they acually look like the ones from 2004) , i have installed a few of them at my work. For years i would always joke arond with my co-worker about them looking like star trek phasers.

The odd thing is that they seem to be so prominent. I didn't know they really were bar-code scanners when people first started making the jokes. They just scream out at me now.

Could the barcode scanners possibly be something Abrams has put in these shots to throw us off? I thought they looked weird when I first noticed them, and now I see they are off the shelf scanners, not painted or modded in any way... Seems pretty stupid.

And there are so many of them! Seriously, if these are for real, what could they possibly be?

I actually had that thought... they're photoshopped in to make us nuts and keep us talking. I doubt it, though.

These are the portable hand-held transporter units mentioned elsewhere which are used by the crew to beam their poop out so that they don't have to leave their stations. They're carefully calibrated.

If they're still using paper, it might be for scanning data into the computer from a hard copy.

That's a good possibility. They could also be some sort of motion sensor like the controls in "The Cage" where you just wave at them.
