Unresolved Trek trailer questions

Their architectural design could have been slightly more inspired, although I suppose the grain silo motifs are understandable considering that these scenes supposedly take place in Iowa.

Amen to that, old friend. How've you been? I take it news of the impending release of said film has done nothing to deter your belief that we're entering the 39th year of a drought of acceptable new Trek?

I have to say the biggest unresolved question for me from the new trailer is whether the *spirit* of Star Trek will be preserved. Although fleetingly brief, the trailer did seem to present a feel of a society that is far from the utopia we've been used to seeing. I could be reading too much into it, but there's something about the gargantuan, endless mammoth structures (whether space-based on land-based), the robo-cop guy and even the people that reminds me more of Blade Runner or the Star Wars prequels than Trek.

What I want to know most of all is that however good the special effects are, however differently the inside and outside of the ship might be, whatever the plot is... that the central plank of Star Trek, a message of optimism and humanity carried by protagonists who are a better breed of human being.

In short, no matter what revisions are made to the rest of it, I hope Star Trek doesn't lose it's soul. It'll be interesting to see if we hear anything else before the movie premieres that clues us in to whether the franchise is safe in the hands of its new masters.

Of course, how foolish of me. Comparing GR to pure evil seems a little harsh; or have you still not forgiven him for The Next Generation?

That's tremendously good news; I hadn't been following it all quite so avidly so I'd missed this. The truth is, I think that only Star Trek has ever delivered this sort of thing quite so consistently and I think that the time is right for the world to want to sit down in front of the screen and watch that message once again, in a way they haven't really felt like doing over the last decade.

It still doesn't take away a slight niggle in the back of my mind that the special effects, whilst impressive, do look somewhat reminiscent of the soulless, endless scenarios that plagued the Star Wars prequels. I'm hoping there's more than enough serious meat to offset the eye-candy.

Speaking of The Dark Knight, I'm hoping that hasn't provided any inspiration for this film. I'm a huge Batman fan but I found the pace of the film absolutely unrelenting and truly exhausting - it's as if they didn't want the audience to catch its breath.

Some of Star Trek's most powerful moments were quiet and relaxed - again, despite the fact that the trailer was maxxed up to the eyeballs with action shots, I'm hoping the balance is relatively good.
