Underrated Movies.

As to the OP's choice; I'm not sure that a low budget, B movie which does much better than anyone anticipated can be called underrated. I'm thinking of Pitch Black, specifically. Coincidentally low budget B movie can also be applied to Casablanca, although it was a much more spectacular success than PB, obviously.

so what's your point? There is more than one meaning to underrated movies. You have not even come up with a list and yet you critisize

Since when is Airplane! underrated?

It is not talked about as much as it used to be

It made the list of the American Film Institute's top 100 comedies in the US not too long ago (coming in at #10), it was referenced recently in the Family Guy episode "Blue Harvest" and it's got a 7.8 rating at IMDB as well as a 98% rating at Rottentomatoes.

I think that's not bad for a movie that's almost 30 years old now AND could be considered quite silly (in the best possible sense, of course ).

Yeah, Airplane! is VERY far from being underrated.
The fact that people don't discuss a film incessantly dose not mean it's underrated.
As for the odd examples of Gone With the Wind & Casablanca; while they are indisputable classics, I haven't exactly noticed many people starting threads about them of late...nor the likes of The Wizard of Oz, The Sound of Music, The Godfather or Citizen Kane for that matter. Dose that mean they're underrated too? Obviously not.

What I meant is movies like Gone With The Wind, Casablanca, Citizen Cane (actually I have not seen this one on many lists lately), The Sound Of Music, and others almost always make it onto popular movie lists, whether it be the yearly AFI categorized lists or online lists or magazine lists. Where as say Monkeybone never makes it onto any lists, like one of the funniest films every made (my opinion) lists. Monkeybone is underrated anyway.

With the Pirates films, I like all three of them. But, whenever it is discussed on tv or radio or in interviews, the first one is almost always the one spoken well of. People say the second and third were not like the first. Well, if they were like the first then both of the films would be critized even more so with people saying 'these two sequels are exactly like the first one', so it is a bit unfair for both movies, so I say they are both underrated, they made tons of money domestically, and worldwide and on DVD and tv airings, but are still underrated

I kinda of liked Tron and it was another ill fated live action Disney movie that came out not that long after The Black Hole in the late 70s. I was surprised the bowling comedy, Kingpin, was given such a low mark on The Radio Times.

I do not think Airplane! is underrated, but it's sequel certainly is and so are the Hot Shots movies (they're far superior to those horrific ++++ Movie instalments crapped out by Seltzer and Friedberg).

Airplaine! 2 - The Sequel is totally underated, it as funny as the first, I mean come on....Sonny Bono in the biggest cameo, hilarious

I really, REALLY enjoy Airplane 2 but IMHO it doesn't even come close to the first one. One of the problems is that it rips off about 75 % of the first one's jokes. And it's got quite a few 'jokes' that IMHO just don't work very well.
The first one in my view probably nails something like 95 % of its jokes, the rest being 'ok' or something along those lines. My feeling is the second one only comes to something like maybe 60 %.
However, I do enjoy seeing the cast again, and I also think the second half of Airplane 2 is pretty good, actually I especially like some of the moments with Shatner ("These lights here are blinking out of sequence. What shall we do? Shatner: "Get them to blink IN sequence").
When the movie finds its own absurdities I think it fares best.


As for underrated movies, I just thought of another one that's underrated our might well be becoming underrated: Quantum of Solace. I really, really enjoyed it myself (just saw it yesterday), and I think it's a great Bond film. But it's taking quite a bit of fire from critics and fans alike which I personally feel is unwarrented.

Quantum of Solace is getting a surprisingly bad rap mainly due to it's counterintuitive editing and gimmicky camera angles leaving some viewers cold, which I can understand, but when fans of GoldenEye lament Quantum of Solace's writing and supposed plotholes you know they're talking shit.

Zoolander is one of those movies that people watched once it came out on DVD because they heard it was so bad, and then, surprisingly, came to find out that it's pretty damn funny. Definitely underrated when it first came out I think.

In the name of Stiller I nominate Mystery Men. Critic and I believe box office bomb, a lot of geeks around here seem to like it, as do I.

In the name of Siwilliams, I nominate The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King because there has not been a single thread about it in months, and must therefore be underrated.

I'd certainly agree with the sentiments on Abyss, though only if it refers to the Special Edition. IMO the theatrical cut is a bit of a mess, from a narrative standpoint and the ending was a bit something and nothing. The SE was FAR superior.
The same should go for "Kingdom of Heaven", I think.

Oh yes and A.I. deserved better than it got.

Today people poo poo Batman (1989), when it is still an excellent movie, that is why I say it is vastly underrated. When the Batman franchise, both 'Batman' (1989) and Batman Returns get a brief mention or none at all, when there might not be a Batman Begins or The Dark Knight without those two excellent Tim Burton films. I never hear Edward Scissorhands in movie lists at all, automatically an underrated movie

Oh and I really enjoyed 'Frequency' too, one of my favourite DVDs. Dennis Quaid rarely disappoints.

I think while the extended version of The Abyss made more sense, it was far too long-winded, which is why the cuts were made in the first place.

I watched A.I. once and could never watch it again, not because it's a terrible movie but because the message is so bleak it affected me too much.
