"Hook"...do you like it?

I haven't watched this movie since I was a kid, and I loved it then. It's on TBS right now, so I'm watching it because I have nothing else to do, and I am falling in love with it all over again.

I did a little online research and found that this movie was very poorly received when it came out. It had almost nothing but bad reviews, and even today it only has a 22% at Rotten Tomatoes.

Now, everybody I know in my age group (I'm 23) loves this movie and can't even fathom why anybody wouldn't like it. So I'm wondering if it's just a weird generational thing.

So do you like "Hook"?

I loved it at the time, but haven't seen it since elementary school. I should probably find and watch it. I've liked everything else I've seen of Spielberg's since E.T.

I don't know if it's because I'm sleep-deprived, but rewatching it now, there are some moments that have had me on the brink of tears. This whole story is incredibly sweet.

I'm also 23 and I totally loved the movie as a kid. I think it was even one of my favourite movies for a while. I remember finding it a bit cheesy when I rewatched it as a teenager, though. But I never thought it was a bad movie.

I love Hook. I was the perfect age for this movie when it came out: 7 years old. Not only was I 7, but I was a fan of the Disney Peter Pan movie since I was a toddler. The movie struck a chord with me at the time, and as such it's always been a beloved film for me that I can still enjoy watching today. It was fun to watch it with my niece recently.

I'm 24 now, so I guess I fall into the same "generation" that loves/d Hook.

same for me as well

All right, for the sake of my curiosity, I'd appreciate it if everybody would post their ages in their replies.

Right now my theory is holding true.

For me, it was the stage play, which for some reason was regularly broadcast on TV where I lived. I did love the songs from the Disney movie, though, even though I didn't have the VHS, so couldn't watch it.

I'm 24.

Always loved this movie. Still remember seeing it in the theater and the whole night surrounding the event which is something I can't say for many other movies I've seen, including ones I've seen in the past year.

So ya, Hook had a big impact on me.

I'm 27

The only things I remember about this movie are Tinkerbell wanting to be a human being... and the fat kid rolling into a ball and knocking down some pirates or something. I don't remember liking or disliking the movie as a whole.

I'm 32.

I saw it with my wife (then girlfriend) when it came out in 1991. We were 17 at the time and both liked it, my wife far more than me. I think it's well done, but I seem to remember that most of the reviews at the time slammed it for how much it cost to make. I think it was seen as a vanity project on the part of Spielberg. We have the tape, and now our kids watch it. My 4-year-old daughter really loves it. There was a period this summer when she was watching it every day.

I was 16/17 when it came out. I watched it on VHS. Not a bad movie. I think I've only seen it the one time.

I'm 32. I saw it in the theatre when it came out and I still love it. It's a great story about reclaiming your power. I remember hearing about the possibility of Julia Roberts leaving the project and her scenes having to be reshot. Supposedly that was going to cost $20 million.

I think Hook's bad rap comes more from the problems surrounding its production (Julia Roberts, the cost overruns, the shooting overruns) than for anything it puts on screen. It hit theaters as a troubled production, and the critics were mercilessly savage with it.

I think it's enjoyable fun.

Wasn't it because of this movie that Spielberg stated that he would never again work with Julia Roberts? I've always heard this but never knew the exact reasons.

My take on Hook - it was okay at best. Roberts was totally miscast as Tinkerbell. Honestly, how can anyone say it was good? The Lost Boys were too much like SoCal tweens for my taste. There was really nothing magical about Neverland. It looked like a Hollywood backlot. Spielberg should have known better.

However, I do have to give Dustin Hoffman (not always one of my favorites) and Bob Hoskins kudos for well-played roles.

A better take on Peter Pan is 2003's 'Peter Pan', although this film does have a few more serious under-pinnings.
