Official Trailer Review & Comments Thread!! [Spoilers, of course]

The shot of Enterprise being built on the ground with Kirk looking on - wow. Really brings the shot of him watching it fall out of the sky in Movie 3 come full circle.
No doubt. I love how the events of the trailer have lent more weight to future events, given that we a slightly better context for them now.

Pretty easy to see why Kirk would be so devestated in TSFS. His devestation hit home before, but now we have an even better context for it.

Saw it online. Seems very good! The cop/kid scene is a little odd, but the Enterprise under construction? Pure brilliance. Loved the new Spock, Thought the battles were awesome, Love the new Enterprise corridors. Scotty struck me as annoying, but then again, he's only in a tiny scene.

It looks like Spock appears before the Vulcan version of the Kyptonian council.

The Kelvin impulse deck is very traditional.

The Enterprise looks pretty good.

That was a neat space-station, very trekkian.

Kirk in a captains shirt briefly, not bad.

I love the shot where the Enterprise exits warp to enter a field of destruction.

That is an awesome shot, and from what I have read the exterior shot that accompanies it is just as good. Its so great seeing a trek movie that has dynamic camera movement that this one is going to. The last shot of the Kelvin just getting pulverized is amazing.

"I like this ship, it's exciting!" :guffaw::guffaw:

Can someone tell me if that is the Enterprise shuttlebay in the trailer? Because if it is the shuttlebay, it is damn huge which would also make the Enterprise damn huge. It looks as big as the Ent-D there at drydock.

I have seen it mentioned both as the Enterprise shuttlebay and as a (ground-based? starbase?) shuttleport. Seems a bit overlarge for a ship-based one, is my impression, but I guess we'll have to wait and find out.

Stupid Roddenberry. In The Making of Star Trek, Roddenberry and Whitfield say the Enterprise was built in the "old San Francisco Navy Yard," and April says the same thing in TAS.

"The unit components were built at the Star Fleet Division of what is still called the San Francisco Navy Yards, and the vessel was assembled in space. The Enterprise is not designed to enter the atmosphere of a planet and never lands on a planet surface." - The Making of Star Trek by Stephen E. Whitfield & Gene Roddenberry.

"Our vessel was constructed in space and has never felt the solidity of the surface of a planet." - Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek Writer & Director's Guide (Bible) dated April 17, 1967.

TGT

Thank god things adapt, culture evolves, and stories progress. I'd hate to be stuck with 1960's mentality for my modern entertainment... :techman:
Or in the case of having the ship built on Earth, take a step back. Modern shouldn't mean scientifically illiterate.

Roddenberry for all his faults did something very right when he created Star Trek... he talked to people who actually worked in the aerospace industry to make sure his show didn't look silly. He put real effort into getting much of the science right. That's why Star Trek inspired so many people to make science a career.

This silliness of the Enterprise being built on Earth is the kind of mistake you'd expect from a movie or TV show back in the 1950s... a bad one.

Ask anyone at NASA where they intend to build a ship to Mars... IN SPACE.

First, the raw materials are there--- either from the moon, or the asteroids.

And second, there's this little thing called gravity which makes lifting large items from the surface of the Earth energy and cost prohibitive.

One of the brilliant things about Star Trek has always been how it did a fairly good job (in most cases) of getting the science right. Seems for all the millions being spent on this film, they weren't able to spend any money on a science advisor.

Sure, the shot of Kirk riding up to the ship under construction on Earth has a certain emotional appeal. But if having the ship being towed into space by a bunch of birds tied to the hull had an emotional appeal that wouldn't change how incredibly stupid it was.

I believe its the shuttlebay at Starfleet command, when the cadets find out there assignments, and Kirk is not posted to a ship. I believe its so hectic because the Romulan incursion into Vulcan space had just been announced, and Starfleet is trying to get as many ships there as possible.

The more I see the trailer, the more I kinda like it. The first time I thought it was much too colorful and full of 'splosions and stuff like that. I actually almost missed it because when it started I was like "What the hell is this." Then he said "James Tibarius Kirk" and I was like holy crap this is it? However, I understand it's the first one so there will be a lot of action but I do have to worry that the action is supersede what I like about Star Trek, and that's the story. It actually made me long for the days of the golden era (1990's, when I was growing up) of Trek. Looking forward to May.

I wrote this on another thread, before I saw this one, so here goes, after a quickie copy+paste:

I've seen the trailer and some screengrabs (rest assured, Mister Moderator Sir, I won't be posting any links - anyway, if I found them, so can anybody...)
Here's my two cents on it:

- There's indeed a Star Wars influence in the movie. For me, being a huge fan of both franchises, it doesn't bother me at all. But I do understand why some of you don't like it. The rather cool "robocop" guy, for instance, could very well be some sort of super-droid from the separatist army!;)
- For those moaning (and bitchin') about how come there's still gas in the 23th century, please listen carefully the next time (or the first time) you watch the trailer: I can't hear a V8 running, or at least any V8 I know! The car is probably equipped with some state-of-the-art gizmo enabling it to move...
- By the way, fot those complaining about how stupid it is for young Kirk to throw the car into the cliff, well pay attention again: the road ends there!
And it's no natural cliff, either: in the first seconds of the trailer we see the Corvette blasting through some kind of road block. It's probably some forbidden area, hence the cops chasing Jim. Maybe the ruins of a WWIII-striken city?
- So much for the "Enterprise is built on Earth but assembled in space" theory. The trailer clearly shows the ship being built... in one piece! And by the way, I'd like to meet the Paramount "spy" who described this very scene in AICN as "Kirk wanders through the desert in his bike and then stops by some factory". Moron!:guffaw:
- The Big E looks great in motion, as I expected it to be. The nacelles' pylons are curved! There's a great shot of it leaving the space station (yes, the space station we all know from the original movies)
- Sarek looks great.. as do the Vasquez Rocks!
- The hangar scene looks awesome (the screengrab I saw shows that one of the cadets is alien)
- The "swirling" transporter effect is cool
- Quinto is great as Spock... and looks MENACING in the scene where Kirk confronts him!
- Kirk faces an amazing monster in the ice planet
- Nero's ship is HUGE! There's a great shot of the Kelvin facing it that shows it's tremendous size
- Bones looks POSSESSED (and great!) in the "space is dangerous" scene
- I didn't like much Scotty and his "wacky" presence. Pegg's scottish accent is spot-on, nevertheless...
- There's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it scene with Pike ordering something. Bruce Greenwood looks the commandeering presence I've always assumed he would be!
- The space battles look amazing... and breathless
- The bridge is WHITE (and, judging by the screengrabs, full of those barcode readers we saw in the pictures) and the curved corridors look great too (by the way, they have nothing to do with the ones we saw earlier this year in the 1701.com viral site... )

All in all, I loved it!

Just one thing...

There's SEX in the movie?
Kirk is a womaniser? Who's the retard who wrote that?
I'm boycotting it!!!!!!!!!

(Please note that this last bit isn't exactly irony-free...;))

Have seen a pirate of the trailer on youtube. It looks like the equivalent of what Michael Bay did with Transformers when he took a 20 year old cartoon and made it real life.

It looks good, although awful ADHD editing made it hard to judge the content and set design, although the space and ship visuals look brilliant.

I predict a 50/50 split on old school Trek fans loving the film or hating it, but I do think that if this is marketed to the hilt by Paramount (something which they have had real problems with in the past), Abrams' effort may do wonders for reinvigorating the franchise with regards to bringing new fans to Trek.

Does anyone know or heard rumours as to what rating Abrams is angling for? Will it be child friendly or will it go for the more meaty PG13?

A friend of mine saw QUANTUM OF SOLACE but said the TREK trailer wasn't attached to the copy of the movie at his particular showing. Is anyone else experiencing this?

I'm pretty sure I remember reading that it would be a solid PG-13 rating.

Yes, quite a few have reported the same. It's not a sure thing, and it would be a good idea to call the local theater ahead of time to check.

HAVNT. SEEN. IT.

But, thats not why i dropped by, if i dropped by to say that then id be a sad little attention grabbing person by typing a meaningless reply to be seen/heard.:p

What i did drop by to say though, is that i have seen a few stills, pretty much forced upon me in a few emails that i was not expecting from mates. WANKERS.

The shot of Kirk watching the ship being assembled really hit home. Looking up a vast ship like that, imagining what it will look like and what shell be doing and then to end up actually commanding her is fantastic. :techman: It creates a real emotional link between Kirk and the Enterprise.

Thats all i have to say, i dont really want to see it on youtube though, id rather see it in theatres like the rest of you guys in the US, but being in shitty little britain, its not attatched to any movie release that i know of, so ill wait for it to be on Apple.com or find a movie its attatched to.

Or, ill give in a few seconds and...

No, bad thoughts. MUST. NOT. CLICK. YOOUUU... TUUUUUUBE. MUST. RESIST. THE. MOUSE.

ARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. DAMMIT.

I dont know if i should or not, its a tough decision.
