Question about the link from STXI to TOS

What's his face

This new movie looks really cool. I like the new design of the Enterprise, a lot. I guess after the events of ST XI the Enterprise gets "upgraded" to the pie plates and string design.

Or does this movie take place in a new continuity? I don't get it. Is this a new universe or is it the same one?

Either way the movie looks cool :)

That's a question of much debate. . . either it's a totally different universe, or a temporary alteration to the "alpha" universe and will be linked back to TOS as we know it.

It is the same universe more or less only with some canon ignored maybe.

Word is that changes in ship/bridge designs etc will be explained in the movie.
Not that I really care for that.

Abrams & Cohorts are constantly avoiding this question by saying things like "it's not quite a prequel" or "it's not quite a reboot." Then they say something like "it's kind of a combination of both, while not being similar to either at all."

At this point, I don't see how the movie could be in the same continuity as everything else, despite A&C claiming there is a canon explanation for why things look different in the movie.

You know... it is quite easy to compliment the new without criticizing the old.

The old continuity is in old Spock's past. So, the old Trek universe still happened... but now we're seeing the beginning of a new Trek universe.

All speculation, of course.

I think we'll be stuck in a new "Yesterday's Enterprise" or "Yesteryear" universe... Fine by me. A reboot without the reimagining.

This is where, you know, ACTUALLY SEEING THE MOVIE will come in quite handy. A radical idea, I know. But still, one worth considering.

I suppose it's not much different from the events of First Contact creating a slightly different timeline, since it's reasonable to assume that Cochrane never met people from the future in the original TOS/TNG timeline.

Here's my thing:

Who cares?

I mean, seriously, why does it matter?

TOS was never much for internal consistency.

Right now to me it seems much of this film takes place in an alternate timeline, much like Yesterday's Enterprise.

Hurray precedence!

Yet there are those who seem to find the reverse extraordinarily difficult. Curious, is it not?

Indeed. I'm all for comparison without the criticizing. As smart as some of the people are here... it would make for some lively debate.

My impression is that is exactly what they're doing.

Something will happen in the first few minutes of the film to cause a change in the timeline, setting up the conflict for the rest of the film.

Then Abrams and crew will be able to tell whatever stories they wish without being held to canon as we have known it up to this point.

In one sense, this is a clever way to do a reboot. But it's a bit like having your cake and eating it to.

We'll see in May how well they pull it off.

The alternate timeline theory may end up being true, but even if it isn't, so what?

I mean, so what if the technology and ships -- and the overall look -- is different for this film. This is a movie being made in 2008. The TV show was made in 1966. It's bound to look totally different. There doesn't need to be an in-universe reason for the fact that the new filmmakers wanted to update the look -- it simply looks more adavnced becuse the movie was made 42 years after the original.

We all have imaginations. Even if the "prequel" ship looks more advanced than the TOS ship, we can use our imaginations and just say "it's the same continuity, but it simply looks different because it's a new film."
