4 Clip descriptions from Empire *Spoiler heavy*

Read the Den of Geek description of the scenes (the link is at trekmovie.com). If it's correct, it answers one of my queries above
about why everyone is at a bar in Iowa
.
Apparently,
the Enterprise is being built on the ground in Iowa. And that could explain young Kirk watching it being built from afar while on his motorcycle.

If the site's observation/interpretation of the clip was correct, of course.

...and in other news doctors are baffled over a sudden sharp upswing in the number of strokes...

Just showed this to a friend who FLIPPED THE $&(! OUT over it.

Wonder if the Catholic Church ever had to deal with people like this?

This sounds pretty awesome. Though it seems Kirk is entering the Acadamy after Sulu, Uhura, etc. Now that's going to make some heads spin.

That's as far as I read. Uhura is ordering Cardassian drinks? Referance to Cardassians in the 23rd century?

COCKFUCKERY!!!!

The problem here is what?

Oh, you're absolutely right. After all, it's not as if the Federation had no contact with the Cardassians in the 23rd century.

Oh wait, they didn't. And that is the problem.

Absolutely wrong. There is no canon fact or implication of what you're saying. Cardies first appeared in TNG, but that doesn't mean they didn't exist before then, or that Earth was not aware of them.

I've always considered that a continuity anomaly which I've ignored.
Why?

The idea of a Cardassian poet living on Vulcan in the 22nd century just didn't fit with established facts, and it was never expanded on or explained, so I saw no need to acknowledge it.

Wrong. It fits just fine, and supports Abrams's take on it.

Also, this is just a fucking drink. Get over it.

Nice write up Rat Boy. I think Kirk's Starfleet history is probably one of the most problematic aspects when making a prequel. It puts him on a couple of other ships making a this type of story tough to tell. It's looking like they'll just have Kirk going straight from the Academy to the Enterprise.

A brand new Enterprise with Pike in command. And no Robert April. And I find myself not caring. Feels good.

I find it hard to believe these clowns have ever even seen Star Trek, the continuity violations are so blatant.

Given the rather absurd hyperbole of your avatar and location field, such an extreme reaction as this ... isn't terribly surprising.

Well I imagine our friend Capt. April is upset since Abrams seems to be wiping him out of existence. I would think that would make anyone cranky.
BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Not even a funeral... just gone! New idea for Abrams... every time someone whines about canon... eliminate that thing from Star Trek... this could really work... eventually there won't be anything for those canonistas to cry over! :rommie:
The Deadly Years - Kirk states that he is 34 years old.
Who Mourns for Adonais - Chekov states that he is 22 years old.

Cut to: The bridge where Captain Pike asks the “Russian whizkid” at the helm what his name is. It’s Ensign Chekov. Cue a comedy sequence where Chekov attempts to enter an authorization code into the computer, announcing “nine, five, wictor, wictor, two” in a perfect Walther Koenig exaggerated Russian accent and being denied. Chekov goes on to address the ship over the comm., stating that anomaly has been detected in the neutral zone, a lightning storm in space. A distress signal from the Vulcan (“wulcan”) high command has caused the Enterprise to go and investigate.
This was my concern with using all seven characters in a Kirk origin tale. It makes no sense that a character that is twelve years younger than Kirk already being a bridge officer.

Not to mention the fact that evidenty the Enterprise is only three years old when Kirk first shows up. Definitely steals some of the non-canon thunder from the Chris Pike. Plus, poor Robert April no longer exists.
Hmmm... dead April vs. great Trek... I know which way I'll vote! :techman:
It might not even be Jonathan Archer, captain of the NX-01. It could be Jonathan Quincy Archer, who's not yet followed in his President father's footsteps in his Paris office.
NX-01 skipper was Jonathan H. W. Archer. Admiral Jonathan W. Archer was a "C" student who didn't do very well at improving dad's (or his) legacy. :alienblush:
I love the shrieks of canonistas in the morning.

Sounds like victory. :techman:
Victory tastes good!

We never saw any ships which didn't reuse the Enterprise model, so are they the only starships which starfleet had?

We never saw Starfleet command, or the Federation Headquaters or President, does that mean they didnt exist.

Just because the Movies or TOS didn't show or mention something, does not mean it didn't exist...

I can NOT stress how true this statement is and wish some people would learn from it.

I would be highly surprised if "Admiral Archer's beagle" is the same Porthos from ST:E, since I don't know of many dogs with a 110 year life span.

So I've been wondering, not much has been established about dogs living in the future, canonically speaking. There is nothing saying they race aren't long-lived, and therefore one from the 22nd could have been alive in the 23rd century. And since Abrams and his cohorts are saying they'd like to provide various links to the other Trek series, this could be a perfect link to Enterprise. Have a scene where Kirk and Spock enter an alien night club in search of Nero. While they're looking around, they pass by Porthos. You know what would make this scene even better? Have Porthos wearing a sombrero. The potential is awe-inspiringly awesome.

Discuss.

You're all right, Wormhole. :techman:

I stopped reading after the bar scene between a young Kirk and Uhura. If the rest of it is that bad, I'll find the film utterly offensive.

Wow. Just...WOW.

Seriously?

Please, friend...seek help, for your sake if not for anyone else's.
Shatterhand, I asked you once before not to do that. Please don't do it again.

Even though I don't personally give a shit about the drink "violation," I think the Porthos thing is not raising eyebrows because:

1) It's not a canon violation (well, okay it is but that's super nitpicky.)

and

2) It's funny as hell

Yup.

BTW, we don't know that it's Porthos - he'd be a real old doggie. Probably a successor beagle, or a clone.

I don't care about canon violations, that shit is hilarious.

Well, of course for those of us who liked "Star Trek: Enterprise" (both of us) the gag and the sacrifice of the poor beagle serves the larger purpose of carrying some of that series forward into a new production as part of the "Star Trek" faux history.

Hmm...is that a "larger purpose?" Nah, it's almost on the same level as worrying about the now presumably nonexistant Robert April, I guess. Still, I like it. ;)

So in forty years we've gone from the first interracial kiss to Kirk grabbing Uhura's tits in a bar? Ah, progress...

Are they all ensigns now? Seems Chekov was quite a slacker while everyone else became Captains, Commanders, Lt. Commanders and Liuetenants he was still an ensign. Guess that's what happens when you spend all your time getting wasted with space hippies.

The only problem I had with that is what Uhura said to Kirk about midwestern boys. I didn't think that was something Uhura would say (sounds a bit immaturish.) Other than that.... I loved what I read! Roll around to May!!

I think that we, as a fanbase, have been immersed in the post-TNG PC brand of Trek for so long that we think that anything said that is off color (read: funny and depricating) is heretic and should never be spoken by a Trek character. I think it's refreshing, IMO. Anything to erase the visual toxin that is Fan Dancing Uhura.

Well, all I know is
George Takei would be very pleased with Sulu knocking Kirk out!

Well, it gives another meaning to putting lipstick on a pig.

<snipping apparently offensive message...>

Shatterhand, I asked you once before not to do that. Please don't do it again.

I apologize for my offense. I'm just growing rather disgruntled at all of the negativity over details that, in my mind, shouldn't have such a significant effect on one's enjoyment of this movie.

I guess what I'm left to wonder is why my statement is so terrible when such narrow-mindedness goes unquestioned. If you intend to suggest it's because my statement is directed at one person in particular, it really isn't, so that argument doesn't really apply.

If you wish to ban me, feel free. I really couldn't care less at this point.

I wish I was a journalist right now but alas I'm waiting until the trailer comes out to see what this movie is really all about!

Man that sounds awesome. I am really excited about this movie. I've been a Trek fan for most of my life, and I'm really excited about this new movie and the possible new direction we're going.

It really does sound like good Star Trek. So far.

And to those who have a issues with the canon changes; it's a reboot, it's not the same as the old, so this is the new canon. Why are people surprised when they find out about changes?

That's the thing: there aren't many real "changes".

Most of these so-called continuity/canon arguments feature people mad because the blanks they filled in themselves don't match up with the blanks that other people filled in for them. This was Enterprise's problem: half the people critical of the show were mad about things that were never officially canon, didn't really go against anything seen on-screen. They just didn't follow exactly what some people imagined in their own heads and therefore they geot all pissed off.

No big deal, you can't please everyone. Take Robert April up there: he wouldn't be happy unless the movie was composed of footage cut-and pasted from the old episodes and based on a novel written by DC Fontana. Who gives a shit, he'll probably go see it anyways, enjoy it, and then come here and complain about how much he hated it. C'est la vie!

I've been a fan of TOS for a very long time, but I'm not concerned that much about minor continuity violations, I always assumed that they were not only inevitable but intentional. That's why the film involves time-travel. What concerns me about the scene descriptions is that they sound awful, especially the comedy bits. Kirk accidentally grabbing Uhura's tits in a bar fight? Kirk's hands swelling up to an enormous size. Kirk trying to warn everyone of danger but his tongue stops working. HAHAHAHA!!!!!! Let the wackiness ensue. Granted comedy of this nature tends come off better on the screen than on the page but it still doesn't sound good to me. Also, the movie seems filled with cliches. Talented Bad Boy doesn't play by the rules but learns his lesson. Future best friends hate each other in the beginning but through crisis become close, etc. Most importantly, when direct quotes from the scenes were mentioned, it didn't sound like the characters voice had been captured at all with the exception of McCoy, who was spouting verbatim quotes from TOS. Let's not forget that the guys who wrote this movie wrote Transformers which I thought was an awful, awful movie. I was holding out hope that they would do better with this script since they are big Star Trek fans. I'm no longer holding out that hope. I hope Star Trek proves me wrong and ends up being a great film.
I like Star Trek, but am not an anal fanboy of TOS; however, the descriptions I read scream of fanboywank and makes the movie sound absolutely stupid.

I've noticed some inconsistency regarding Urban's McCoy. One says he's not much like Kelly's version, another made it seem like he was mimicking him.
