NBC to Reboot Knight Rider

NBC will completely overhaul its Knight Rider continuation.

The show, recently granted a season order by NBC, will drop three of its cast regulars - Sydney Tamiia Poitier, Yancey Arias and Bruce Davison - and draw more parallels with its '80s predecessor.

Showrunner Gary Scott Thompson told The Hollywood Reporter: "It's a reboot. We're moving away from the terrorist-of-the-week formula and closer to the original, making it a show about a man and his car going out and helping more regular people, everymen."

The rejigged Knight Rider will debut as a two-parter in January, with the first part slated to air after a Sunday night NFL match and the second on the following Wednesday.

The show will not add any new cast regulars, instead focusing on the characters of Mike (Justin Bruening), Sarah (Deanna Russo), Billy (Paul Campbell), Zoe (Smith Cho) and KITT.

It may have recently gotten a full season order, but NBC are obviously not too happy with how things have gone so far.....

I've never heard of a reboot halfway through a season and a little early for NBC to do that because last week may of only been a blip before the show was getting over 7 million.

Also huge mistake in dropping at least Yancey Arias because the whole Mike backstory which cannot be dropped because we've been left with hints about it and I think alot would be pissed to not find out about it. Also how the hell are they going to expain dropping Bruce Davison ? but the women yeh shes more than expendable.

I would consider keeping it at Sundays, simply because between 7-10pm there is a lot of people watching TV, probably more than any other night.

If KR gets a second season I'll be absolutely amazed.

Fair play, at least they've tried to do SOMETHING other than outright cancel it, but for me, this is probably the first indication that it won't be around next year.

Airing out of a mainly male demo NFL match for a mainly male demo KR show...actually smart

 wow smart

Assuming this source is reliable, if you are going to reboot this is the best time to do it before the show has firmly established everything. Every week it seems the people on the net say they need to drop the extra cast and get back to basics and it sounds like that is what they are doing so maybe this will actually be supported by the fans as well.

Wow. Just wow.

I wonder how they'll explain the exits of those three characters? Well, let's be honest, nobody would really miss Carrie (Sindey Tamiia Poitier), but the other two...

Still, for a show to get so totally overhauled halfway through its first season, I'm guessing unless the overhaul bumps it up into the 10 million viewers range on a regular basis, we can kiss Knight Rider goodbye.

7 million is not a good number, though considering the sickly state NBC has been in these past few seasons, it looks good in comparison to their other shows. Boston Legal was considered a "bubble show" when up for its 4th and 5th season renewals, even though it was pulling in 9-10 million viewers before the strike.

Assuming this source is reliable...
The same story is being carried by the Hollywood Reporter, so I think it's legit. It sounds like it was already in the pipeline (they're currently shooting Episode 15, so the reboot has already been done), and the fact that the story broke after Wednesday's dismal ratings is maybe/maybe not coincidental.

Yeah, that's a good point. On the one hand it seems totally desperate, but on the other hand, at least they're trying something rather than just plodding along until NBC axes the show.

Sounds like just what this show needs. The FauxTU set, characters and stuff is too much. It needs to tune down the intentional corn and they also need to bring KITT's abilities into check. (A replicator and morphing into a truck or van? Please.)

They didn't say anything about getting rid of the morphing. But I for one won't miss the SSC if we never see it again. I doubt that'll be the case, if for no other reason than it probably cost them a king's ransom to build, and they don't want the accountants to soil themselves.

That's why I said they ALSO need to bring KITT's abilities into check.

As in, a reccomendation of what they "need" to do on top of what they already plan on doing.

Reading comprehension: Fun! :)

This is just plain weird. I can't imagine that dropping Davison is really a good idea, even within the framework of what I understand they are trying to do.

Morphing into a different Mustang I can believe, but a truck or a van? :wtf:

No way. Dump those two retards, Billy and Zoe, and keep Davidson's character. He would be akin to Devon Miles.

To me, the word "reboot" is way overused. There have been plenty of shows in the history of TV that have undergone massive changes in the middle of their runs, with premise changes, and cast changes, etc. Some shows have even changed titles during their runs. I don't see how this qualifies as a "reboot".

"Reboot" seems a strong term.

"Retool" seems more appropriate.

This is funny as hell. The TV movie did well the show got picked up. When that happened they said they were going to change things up some more, make it more of a KITT Team and such. Now they are going back to where they should have started in the first place!

I think this is a good move to move the series closer to the original series. One man and his car with a small team.

You have to ask yourself, where would the danger and suspense be if Knight Rider industries was flourishing with more than a dozen of random tech people, a huge base and endless supplies.

"Oh KITT was destroyed, well we have enough resources to build another"

I wouldn't mind if Knight industries had to rebuild from the ground up with limited resources to fix KITT.

Wow, I'm sort of curious to tune in just to see a show basically reinvent itself in the middle of a season. I guess it shows how desperate NBC actually is...

This will be just like when Charles in Charge got a whole new family! :p

So will they actually bring an actual conclusion to everything happening and a reason for the change in directions? Or will it just be suddenly different?
