Sylvester Stallone is set to star in and helm "The Expendables" for Nu Image/Millennium Films.

Stallone, who also penned the script, will be joined onscreen by Jason Statham, while Jet Li is in final negotiations to join the actioner.

Pic follows a team of mercenaries on a mission to overthrow a South American dictator. Lensing starts in February in Costa Rica and Louisiana.

Producers are Avi Lerner, John Thompson and Kevin King Templeton. Boaz Davidson, Trevor Short and Danny Dimbort exec produce.

Stallone joined forces with Nu Image/Millennium on the latest "Rambo," which he also helmed and co-wrote

Could turn out to be good, I loved Rambo. I don't think there is a single Statham movie I've seen him in where I didn't at least enjoy watching him, even if the rest of the movie was 'meh'.

I will watch Statham and Jet Li in anything. They have made some really good action movies over the years. War being one of my favorites.

Sounds more like "The Unwatchables."

The story going around is that Stallone offered a part to Van Damme who turned it down for who knows what reason (he's doing another Universal Soldier movie for crying out loud!!!), and the part was then offered to Lundgren.

Just look at my Avatar. Rambo 4 was a modern action movie classic. The rape and pillage of the village by the Burmese Army was one of the most horrifying scenes ever filmed on a Hollywood movie. But it's totally balanced out by the awesomeness of that last scene when HE GETS ON THE 50 CAL. AND SHOOTS UPS THOSE BASTARDS REALLY GOOD OH MY GOD I'M NERDGASMING JUST THINKING ABOUT IT!!

And Rocky 6 was excellent as well. So long as keeps doing what he was doing with those, then it should be great.

Seems like Van Damme was already offered a role and knocked it back. Apparently that's the role that Lundgren is up for now.

It's being reported that Robert Knepper, Randy Couture and Forrest Whitaker have been added to the cast.
