Cloverfield

I read or heard that the vestigial "limbs" were actually feeding tubes through which he could suck material off the ocean floor (or people) right into his stomach. There was going to be a scene where he uses them in the film, but it got cut.

That would've been awesome and gross.

I enjoyed this movie a lot, it was a fun and clever monster movie. But I agree that it was overhyped by the drooling fanboys at the time. Great fun, but hardly a cinematic masterpiece.

I enjoyed it quite a bit. But it was all style and little substance; a nicely executed gimmick to give a fresh perspective on a fairly run of the mill monster smashes city flick.

That's why I can't imagine how a sequel would be handled. The shaky cam - to me - is only good one time out, and any other approach is just another Godzilla knock off.

I wasn't really looking for depth of characterization in this, and I don't believe the movie was really aiming for it. It's a well-made little sci-fi action piece, and interesting experiment in style.

That's the way I look at it. It's fun to watch once or twice, and it gets points for being both unique and also quality work on a relatively conservative budget.

I don't recall anyone saying it was a cinematic masterpiece. It might have been one of the better monster movies or better sci-fi action movies of the past couple of years, but no one said it deserves an Oscar or that Clover was a better actor than Al Pacino. :)

Honestly, isn't "fun" and "clever" exactly what a movie like this should be? Why expect anything more, or hold expectations of something more against it?

Hmmm I wouldn't use the term "fun" and "clever", but it was entertaining.

You didn't say that, but the Capt. did. How can something like a monster movie that blows shit up not be fun basically by definition? Was it boring and entertaining for you?
