can anyone post pics of the unused phase 2 enterprise ship? i seen a painting of it on the back of some marvel comics out around the time before release of sttmp and i read it was used in tng at the battle of wolf 359 somewhere, anyone?

I loved that ship. I wish Brian Fuller would use those Ralph Mcquarrie designs for a new series set 100 years after TNG. Now that would be cool.

Here's a pretty nifty rendering from a while ago...

You guys are talking about PLANET OF THE TITANS, not PHASE II. The third poster, his image, THAT is from PHASE II.

Yeah, McQuarrie's design would be this monster...

If you squint a little, there's more than a passing resemblence with the Enterprise-D...

Interesting, the inclusion in the Jefferies sketches of that drawing of a hand holding a pole. Perhaps an athlete preparing to throw a javelin? Inspiration for the shape of the nacelle pylons?

The fan production Star Trek: Phase II (formally New Voyages) will be using the P:II Jefferies ship design with modifications by Daren Dochterman, whose legit Trek credits include the Director's Cut of TMP and the Ships of Line calendar.

See: http://trekmovie.com/2008/08/28/fanmade-new-phase-ii-enterprsie-ogam-announce-dvd/

I've always been a fan of this design and P:II in general, and I can't wait to see Dochterman's version in the latest Phase II episodes.

If there's one Trek related misattribution I could stamp out, it's that the Planet of the Titans designs and any of McQuarrie's work were for Phase II. Argh.

Back to the actual subject: I'm gonna plug Dennis Bailey's WIP...

...which is a little closer the model under construction for Phase II. It's discussed in this thread.

This is one of the things that aggravates me so much about Dennis. His attention to detail in his CGI work and his writing don't mesh with his cavalier attitude towards maintaining a consistent continuity. He should know better.

If you look in the lower right of the same drawing, there's another detail about the angle at which the pylon joins the nacelle, with an instruction which looks like it reads "sweep back 30°-35°" (or possibly "38°-35°"?) The hand holding the pole may be used in illustrating that same configuration, perhaps?

I like the "Phase II" ship much more than the "TMP" Enterprise. The "Phase II" ship is much more like the "TOS" ship, my all-time favorite. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! :)

I had mixed feelings about the refit design from the beginning. I thought that eliminating the glowing of the saucer domes and the bow-caps of the nacelles was a mistake. And the redone interior sets and those dreadful TMP uniforms looked awful.

If TMP had directly resulted in a "next generation" TOS series, I would have preferred the "Phase II" ship shown here, with interior sets more like a cross between TOS and 1701-D (scaled down, of course). Imagine the refit Enterprise bridge, configured much like the TOS bridge, but with the nobs and toggles replaced with stations looking somewhat like the aft science stations on the 1701-D bridge. And give the crew nicer chairs. They can be bolted down and have restraint-armrests like TMP, but give them some style like the loud ones used on Styles' Excelsior in "The Search for Spock". (Well, maybe toned down a little.)

Well, there are a lot more rim windows on the Phase II version, and their arrangement is not as aesthetic as the original's.

Maybe to you, Christopher, but let's be clear that the arrangement of saucer windows on the 11' model was mostly a practical, not esthetic consideration. All of the windows on the front starboard quarter could be lit by one bulb. With a CGI model, that is no longer a consideration.

I think the main problem is we're all used to the placement of the windows on the 11' model and the arrangement on the Phase II ship used by New Voyages is simply different, not necessarily better or worse.

I hate the windows on the saucer...
Besides being a bit recessed, the difference between these Phase II windows and the ones on the 11' model is...?

I was talking about the Dochterman built P2 Enterprise -- and if you think the windows on that match the ones on the old ship pictured above -- you need to get your eyes checked.

Also, if you look at the model being built for the real P2, they you can see that model did NOT have the ST:TMP style rim rings that the Dochterman version has. In fact, I don't even see any windows on that model -- but in the paintings they match those of the original ship.

Had the Docterman version done that, then I wouldn't be nit-picking about it. I also don't like the blue navigation dome on the bottom of the saucer. All the paintings of the P2 ship had a glowing white dome like the original ship.

So -- "whachoo say about that"?
