The Night Crew

Okay. I thought that Schrodinger's Cat was pretty well-known. I was ready to stake it that at least 50% of people would have at least heard of Schrodinger's Cat, whether or not they remembered or understood the thought experiment. But today, when I met my friend for Scrabble, and brought up last week's Nova in conversation, I was shocked to find that she had no clue what I was talking about. She's very intelligent, and well-educated, but had not heard of Schrodinger's Cat. After I explained the experiment and its implications to her, she said that most people wouldn't know about it, whilst I contended that most people would; I even tried to justify my position by saying that they made a Schrodinger Cat joke on House.
Anyway, after we split up for the day I spent the rest of the day asking everyone I knew if they'd heard of Schrodinger's Cat. I asked people of many ages, many ethnic groups, men and women, from all walks of life. Do you know what I discovered? Sonia was right. All day, the only person who knew what Schrodinger's Cat was was my roommate, who asked me why I looked so deflated when I got home.

But he's a Trekkie, so maybe that's why.

You live in a country where one in five people can't name the planets of the solar system, who Galileo Galilel was, or what the smallest atomic particle is. You think they're going to know who Erwin Schroedinger and his Cat are? :wtf:

Of course she's right. The unwashed masses aren't gonna know about that.

But I live in New York! We're a blue state! We're smart!

And i live in a bigger Blue State, CA, where the public school system sucks. Sorry to break your rose colored glasses dear girl.

Just blew that theory out of the water then, didn't you. :p

My roommate was just as shocked as I was. We both thought that, among relatively educated people, Schrodinger's Cat was common knowledge. I mean, they made a joke about it on House! And...and...it's on a tee shirt!

I teach in NYC public schools. Had I ever rose-colored glasses, they were broken there.

I can safely say that Schrodinger's Cat was never brought up in my public education, and I grew up in a relatively good school district.

I'll give you that. It wasn't brought up in my public education either. But I didn't go to a good school.

You mean a bunch of mamby-pampy, God hatin', Anti-American elitists who spend their days at the Met sippin' their non-fat/ half-decalf lattes and their nights readin' them books without pictures while stuffing their faces with caviar and arugula, right?

I discovered it on my own.
Me too.

My brand of elitism involves soy milk and caffeine, and I like comics. So there!

I am thinking of making some spiked apple cider for our Halloween party on Friday, but I don't like the recipes I'm finding. The online recipes spike the cider with brandy, and the other recipe I know uses Everclear, which I'd like to stay away from if I can.

How does this sound?

Warm apple cider spiked with Green Apple Pucker and Butterscotch schnapps? It'd be like a warm caramel apple shot.
