Rare Trek TOS Photos Courtesy of Los Angeles Times

So, my hometown fishwrap of record - the Los Angeles Times - has gone downhill recently under new ownership and rather crappy reporting in some areas.

However, they have expanded their entertainment coverage. One of their writers combed through the Times extensive photo collection and uncovered two interesting TOS/TAS era photos.

(1) Photo of Cal Tech students protesting the Trek cancellation in 1968 - which proved successful as we all know.

(2) Photo of the Big Three recording lines for TAS. This is interesting since I read someplace that Shatner preferred to record his lines remotely while touring the country [trying to find work in his camper].

Enjoy!

Actually, by '73, Shatner's career had already gotten going again, albeit on a lower rung on the food chain than before Star Trek, but at least he wasn't living in a friend's camper anymore.

He generally recorded his lines into a tape recorder during spare moments on whatver movie set he was on at the moment, as did some of the others. It was extremely rare for the entire cast to be available at the same time for a read-through.

DeForest Kelly's pants make me want to cry.

Joe, a loon

Come on, admit it, you know want a pair yourself!

Oh, I already have that material. It's on Grandpa's chair out in the garage, the one we haven't had the heart to throw away since he died in 1978.

That one's pretty clearly a promo shot and, while it may have been taken at a taping session, was not taken while they were actually recording lines. (Each would likely have had their own mic and all would certainly have been wearing headphones.)

I was amused to read about the text accompanying the first picture which suggested that the L.A. Times editor was so thoroughly un-hip that he thought the signs referred to Dr. Benjamin Spock.

Thanks for posting them.

I think Outhouse4 might have found himself a bonus picture in the one of the Shat, Nimoy, and De doing lines for TAS.

I guess there were a lot more Spock fans vs Kirk fans in 1968. I like the sign that says "It would be illogical to cancel Star Trek" but I'm not quite sure what to make about the "Draft Spock" sign.

AMAZING pix - First off, McCoy's wide-wale cords are great! I also love any post-Trek shots of the Shat.

I was looking at the "protest" picture, and it strikes me as odd that there are so many nice and neat Spock signs. Was the Vulcan that much of a phenom, then?

I have the vibe that this was a little staged - it looks like a protest scene from an episode of Batman!

What did that guy play on his guitar?
