The Enterprise computer....

My guess is that the computer won't talk at all during the movie.
I find that difficult to believe, considering how hard the folks doing this movie seem to be trying to copy current trends (which is really going to date it, going forward, I'm afraid).

Seriously... you've used a GPS, haven't you? Our computers and technology talks to us all the time. So I'd be stunned if they decided to deviate from both established Trek "style" and contemporary technological trends.

If the computer has a voice, it will probably sound a lot like the voice that your GPS talks to you with. Something bland and colorless, but not "robotic" like the stuff we got in TOS or TNG.

Unless you have voices like this on your GPS http://www.pigtones.com/

Perhaps the voice of William Shatner in a cameo...

Kirk (Pine): Computer: damage report.

Computer (Shatner): All systems......operational. Minor...damage...deckSixAndDeckNine. Minor injuries......reported.

Followed by

Computer: I... AM... CAPTAIN KIRK!!!!
Pine: Scotty, I thought you fixed this....

Majel Barrett-Roddenberry will reprise her role as the voice of the starship Enterprise computer in J.J. Abrams' upcoming "Star Trek" feature. She's voiced the role in four "Star Trek" TV series and three films.

Well if it's reported by Variety it must be right.

It does seem a bit strange for the news to be first coming from there but, it's still good news! WooHoo

Actually it's not that strange for them. And Variety is about as reputable a source as you can get.

Yeah, Variety is generally very solid, as a source. I am a little surprised that TrekMovie hasn't picked it up, but it hasn't even been three hours yet.

As long as they don't have that ridiculous rat-a-tat-tat typewriter sound, I could really care less who does the computer voice.

Agreed, that was done in the 60s as they believed it would make the computer sound futuristic, how would they have known that within 40 years it would be seen as silly....this is one area where demanding canon to be kept is rediculous lol if it was in the film you would have the majority of an audience laughing.

The Trek fans will laugh because of the cheesey nod to the retro sound fx

The non fans will be laughing at how stupid it is that their PC is quieter than a 23rd century super computer

Then you will obviously have the small portion who would be happy that a minute detail has been adhered to, continuing to rock back and forth in their cinema seat (or more likely computer chair as they have downloaded it off the Internet to watch going against your proclomation that you will no way see this film:guffaw:)
