It really wasn't a 'demise' (at least from Data's persective).
Data finally found what he was looking for for all these years: humanity. He gave his 'life' to save Picard, his friend. It certainly wasn't a rational decision, or a logical one.

No problem there, but I shed a tear for Spock, Yar, Jadzia - and even Bareil. I had a huge lump in my throat during the flashback sequences in "What You Leave Behind"...

Data was my favourite ST character and I feel that the director of "Nemesis" missed the boat in milking some audienceemotion from Data's decision.

I think John Logan and Brent Spiner had put enough into the script, but the dropping of the early "toast" scene between Data and Picard (see DVD bonus scenes) didn't help, and might have helped round out the balance.

True. The movie (among other things) suffers from some bad editing.

Without B4 the film would have been much better.

Sadly, I know people who totally missed this entire "Spock-placing-his-Katra[sp]-in-McCoy-esque" move entirely. It's sad because it was so blatantly obvious I just couldn't see how anybody missed it.

I'll be honest, I really am sad that we won't ever get to see a proper send-off for this crew. I would love to have seen a "final" mission movie (well, a real one at least) where Picard gets elected as President of the UFP, where Ryker gets killed, where Data gets command of the Enterprise and it all revolves around Qo'nos gets admitted to the UFP and somehow Warf is thrown into the story somewhere (totally invented). That would have been great.

Nope, I go to movies to be blatantly manipulated. It's the director's job to make us laugh, empathize and cry and, if we don't do it in all the right places, it's the director's fault.

More recently, Geordi seems to have accepted that the B-4 can't be a Data II and must forge his own direction. If he can.

Will Trek XI repel old fans?

Between Voyager, Enterprise and Nemesis, any old fans who were going to be repelled were already repelled.

The Raped Childhood Brigade might complain loudly, but they'll see it and they'll be back for the sequel. They'll complain loudly about it, too.

Who knows? Maybe the movie will deserve it. But most everyone that hasn't bee driven off yet is stuck in the rut of thinking "maybe the next one will be better".

I think Nemesis being pretty much stillborn at the box office shows that the fans are not going to automatically show up like good little drones. They have to give us a better reason to show up on opening night than "It's a Star Trek film."

So far, a lot of us are seeing plenty of reasons to stay away from this thing like the plague.

^if by "a lot" you mean you and MattJC, then you are correct. Most people I know, including many I met and saw at Vegas con would disagree with you. A lot of people are looking forward to this film.

Its a potentially awesome Star Trek film offering something new and exciting. The only thing you're hung up on is a few design details.

Please do stay away.

I'll be there opening night, and hopefully many other nights as well. But even if it turns out to be the worst film ever made, I'll be seeing it in a cinema at least twice. Like all the other ST films, although some of those I saw many more times than twice.

ST XI will have to be pretty bad to beat "Queen of the Damned", "The Cat in the Hat", "Logan's Run", the last five "Police Academy" movies, or "The Howling Part 3: The Marsupials".
