Stepping into the TARDIS: Series 1

From what's been written in a few behind the scenes accounts, it was always planned for Christopher Ecclseston to be in 1 series, then regenerate, kind of as an introduction to the new fans of the concept. But the story leaked, and the BBC being a public broadcaster weren't allowed to lie when directly asked if he was leaving. So it was confirmed, and because of the rush to get the story out before the tabloids the article was badly worded and implied Chris couldn't hack the work load, which he (his people) took execption to, the BBC later apologized for it.
The only other evidence we have is Eccleston's famous quote about whether or not he enjoyed his time on Doctor Who: "Mixed, but that's a long story". In itself, it doesn't mean anything, but it seems to indicate that it didn't go totally smoothly.

True, but on the surface that indicates to me a great deal of professionalism on Eccleston's part, by not going into dirty detail on what the problems were.

15 minutes ago, through the persistent generosity of DWF, I am beginning my initial foray into the new Doctor Who. Why? Because I've found that many folks with similar tastes to mine recommend the show. Because of all the newer shows these days, this sounds the most like one I would enjoy.

So here sits me, watching "Rose". Outside of being rather smitten by Billie Piper .. I'm quite enjoying it. From the Doctor's "Nice to meet you Rose. Run for your life!" to Clive's explanation of his research of the Doctor, it's fun. What I'd like to do is offer my own comments, observations and more importantly ... questions. Advice? I'll be glad of it. Critiques? I welcome them.

Let's have some fun! Run for your life!!

I haven't read through this whole thread, but I stumbled across Doctor Who about two years ago and love it. I have to tell you that, "You ain't see nothin' yet". One word: Blink. One of the top five best episodes of nUWho.

I am planning to get back to the next two episodes tonight. It depends somewhat on the normal family activities - not to mention prepping for Halloween - but I should be able to watch/copmment on "Aliens of London" and "World War Three". That's presuming the list of episodes I found on Wiki matches what's on Season 1/ Disc 2 of the DVD set.

For me personally those two episodes are the worst of the season. Others though have enjoyed them for what they are.

The introduction of the most overused, stupid, and obnoxious "villain" in the history of Doctor Who?

Great thread. Love being able to read what new viewers experience when they start watching Who for the first time. It is almost like Easter 2005 all over again...

I Agree

Actually in some cases he's been less than proefessional about talking about what happened. No he wasn't afraid of being typecast nor was he tired, according to Billie Piper's bio he was having problems with his sick dad at the time. In any event his decision to leave reportedly came late in the season and Billie Piper wasn't told about it until towards the end of filming.

William Hartnell, The First Doctor, was becoming increasingly ill and forgetful on set (there were points where his lines were written all over the set, off camera) and wanted to leave. The producers didn't want a good thing to end so soon, thus they came up with the idea that The Doctor could regenerate (although that term wasn't used until much later).

I thought that it was only Jon Pertwee who'd get his lines written on convenient pieces of set (well, he was mainly a radio actor prior to Who, and they get to have the script in hand while recording). Hartnell would just improvise - sometimes very noticeably - if he could't remember the actual line. And, as a very experienced film and stage actor who'd had no trouble with scripts until the last few years, I suspect if anyone had suggested 'hiding' his script around the set, he'd have been so insulted he'd have gone through the roof.

No, I'm pretty sure that happened with Hartnell, too, because there's a visual gaff in one story (I don't recall which) where a label for one of the TARDIS console switches is captured on film.

It was The Edge of Destruction! I thought it was that serial, but I couldn't find any evidence online.

I'll have to rewatch that story, but that seems more intentional to me. Either for the audiences benefit, or just a note from the Doctor to himself.
Hell if I was trying to operate a machine I didn't quite understand I'd probably start marking the controls too.

There were notes all over the tardis. The radiological scanner in the previous story (The Daleks) was also labelled iirc.

1 x 04 - "Aliens of London"

The most remarkable part of this episode so far, is the graffiti "Bad Wolf" on the side of the TARDIS, seen while Mickey was on the roof observing the Doctor entering the TARDIS. Other than that..... it's not quite so much fun or challenging as the previous three. One thing.... when the government security system is doing its search, it comes up with "DOCTOR". Now just how well known is he in Earth affairs? This isn't the first time he's come up. Clive and others have identified him.... so he's apparently been noticed and not tried too terribly hard to stay undercover.

I like Harriet though. "You pass it to the left, first"

The Doctor is fallible it seems. Locking them in the "panic room".

I finally recognized who is playing the General. I recognized the voice as the one of the English Lords from "Braveheart".

Well the government knows about him form his days with UNIT and there's several things about this two parter that come up later on. Keep your eye on Harriet Jones for one thing and Mickey gets some good character development in this two parter. And the woman the Doctor met studying the pig is another Torchwood member.

Mickey seems to have done quite abit of research on the Doctor. Is he connected in any way with Clive or anyone else who has information on him?

No he's just a bit of a computer geek and for right now there's alot of infomation out there about the Doctor.

Harriet ... is a little verbose, but then she's a politician. Of course, I always thought it was Elizabeth who helped create Britain's golden age?

Ah well.... bittersweet parting between Ros eand her mum.

Got a kick out of the Doctor getting the punk to wipe away the "Bad Wolf" graffiti.

And Mickey... I kind of like him , now.
