Romulans=The Beatles; and other musical Trek aliens

I am not Spock

For many years now, Trek has borrowed much from the fashion industry. Back in the 60s, William Ware Thiess was influenced by the then-current fashion when he designed the costumes for TOS.

The Romulans have an almost Beatles-British Invasion look about them, what with the moptop haircuts and all. Same with their Vulcan brethren.

What other aliens have been influenced by music fashion in Trek? Well, let's see. For example, we have the Klingons. They very much fit into the 'heavy metal' scene, with their long unkempt hair, leather and studs, etc. The Cardassians would feel at home in the goth/S&M clique, with their black leather, and those funky headpiece things they wore back in TNG's 'The Wounded'.

And don't get me started on the Bolians and Andorians, and the Blue Man Group.

If Trek aliens were musicians, what kind of music would they play?

We know from DS9 that Klingons like Worf like classical Klingon opera - not very much unlike modern bel canto - but they also have a very noisy, cacophonical pop music, comparable to trashy hard rock, that can be heard in an episode of Voyager where the Doctor creates himself a holographic family and B'Elanna brings a little realism into it: the teenage son is a Klingon wannabe, etc. I kind of sounds like the most violent bits of Marilyn Manson's Smells Like Children album - only less melodic.

I tried to find the episode title in the episode list but I don't even remember what season it is from. Please somebody help me.

When I think of Bajorans, I hear a harp. Is there any harp played in Star Trek somewhere? In TOS, I bet. Uhura sings, but does she ever accompany herself with an instrument? That's it! Spock plays the harp... and she sings. Right?? I know, Uhura's not an alien, but she's a musical ST character. Like Ensign Kim playing the clarinet (I know, not very memorable) and Riker playing the saxophone, of course. Or Picard playing the flute one day.

A lot of classics from the all-american crooners are popular with those 24the century humans. (DS9, etc.) It's all very nice, but someone should musically rock the boat - or simply rock the house, once in a while. Kira kind of does when her holographic alter ego sings Fever. (in season... what ? 6 of DS9?)

Ther's also Seven singing in that double VOY episode and the Doc being a barroom pianist (and not singing, for once). But again, humans. She's ex-Borg, though. It's supposed to have given her perfect pitch.

To play the game, Ferengi remind me of leprechauns. If I must, I imagine them with bagpipes and flûtes and whistles and kazoos. My ears hurt already.

I believe the episode is "Real Life".

I've also commented before that what we've heard of Klingon opera is in some ways not unlike Alban Berg's opera Wozzeck.

That's right. I remember that Klingon industrial metal stuff, with the Holodoc's punk-ass teenage son getting ready to knife some poor guy.
