Here's the Entertainment Weekly article:

Read between the lines of the article: Abrams is using Star Trek to make his version of Star Wars. That's all that this is about for him. If anyone has read his Superman script it was the same thing -- that was his version of the Matrix using Kryptonians.

Expect tons of fx action, Die Hard sized stunts, lots of CGI lens flare and "cute" references to past Treks.

It'll probably be a decent big budget sci fi action flick, but I'm not expecting a Trek adventure on par with what we know and love.

I'm glad someone else thinks this. I thought that I was the only one. Back in the eighties, Trek could have done the reboot or move forward. The decision was made consciously by GR and the other people involved at the time that Kirk, Spock, and McCoy could only be played by the original actors, and thus, TNG was born.

To do this reboot is a complete slap in the face to anyone old enough to have been a fan of the original series before the spin-offs came along. A new movie with completely different characters set in the 23rd century would have be preferable.

But that rant aside, after reading this article, I am getting the distinct impression that this movie is going to end with some sort of "reset" button.

Slap in the face?
In the eighties, all the former cast was alive and kicking and still acting. Now some have passed on, the rest are in retirement....

The small area of the bridge that was in that picture was enough to destroy fandom from top to bottom, and the end of the world is nigh.

Well, if that's what "fandom" is about - and it's not, for a lot of people - the end of that world is way overdue.

You just don't understand!
The bridge is like the Apple Store! Oh my God! How could they!?
How could they kill my memories and somehow manage to destroy all of my Star Trek TOS DVDs from so many miles away!

I didn't think so. He's coming at this from the POV that's most likely to make it work. He's never been a big Trek fan - well, that's probably good.

Look how well it worked with Berman & Braga. :techman:

Berman and Braga had been involved in Trek for over a decade when the quality plummeted. J.J. has a different perspective. Will you like it? Well if you're one of those complaining that the bridge is killing your hopes and dreams, then no. Nothing he will do would make you happy.

Common enough perspective, but that don't make it correct IMO. If it had been any other show, on a regular network, TNG would have been cancelled LONG before Piller got there, and some of that would have been on Berman, and deservedly so. I think he was always a bad influence on the shows in the creative sense.

I always figured Berman as a paint by numbers kind of guy. He wasn't so much creative as he was organized.

Whereas JJ strikes me as more of a Jackson Pollack wannabe. Just shoot the canvas with some paintball guns, call it a picture of a duckie.

If you don't see the duckie, well, you're just not kewl enough for this pic, dude.

As the emperor continues his stroll down Main Street, naked as a jaybird....

I clearly see Star Trek mythos in the screen caps we've seen so far.
It may be a different color, but it's still a duck. If you don't want to see the movie, don't.
The box office will not miss you. It's really not that hard.

I thought the article was incredibly DISrespectful to the fan base. The repeated use of the word "geek", the constant quotes from JJ and Paramount about how they "needed to start fresh", that gave a strong impression that they were running away from the last 40 years of Trek as fast as they could. The idea that "Galaxy Quest" was an accurate depticition of not just some Trek fans, but Trek itself.

Without the support of the fans over the last 4 decades, there WOULD BE NO TREK TO 'REBOOT'. I don't think we need to be worshipped, but would it hurt for us to be respected?
Seeing where the Fans have allowed trek to go under Berman I think we all deserve a good donkey punch. We had the power to stop him way before Enterprise, but we didn't. So If Abrams wants to run away from the mess we have left as continuity then I'll give him a chance. He can't mess Trek up any worse than Berman did.

Besides you've been to conventions right... I think Galaxy Quest was a funny movie because it at us pegged dead to rights.

Indeed, Galaxy Quest succeeded as a comedy, because like all truly good comedy, it is made enitrely with truth (Not the plot obviously, but the characters, yes). It's not snide or mean, I find it to be a very heart-felt film and the best post-Kirk Trek movie, but that's just me.

I think we fans just not to stop being such picky bitches (no offense meant by the use of this term). One of my best friends is a casual fan, and thought the new pics were the coolest thing ever. Let's keep in mind that the majority of Trekkies/Trekkers are pretty casual, and nowhere near as hardcore as anyone posting in this topic.

Personally, I'm glad the franchise is going in a new direction. I'm glad we're going back to the basics, but at the same time, I know there'll be fresh spins on it. And once again, optimism will be cool.

That's my 2 cents.
Well said, my friend! I love Galaxy Quest because I could see many of us in the film. Tim Allen had Kirk down so well, and Justin Long and friends reminded me of some Trek friends I had in Junior High School. Having worked at many conventions, I could see they had nailed the whole scene.
This movie is making me feel the way I did when I saw the promo commercials for TNG back in 1986. I was six years old and a massive Star Trek fan thanks to my mom, who got me into the show when she'd watch TOS every night at 7 PM on channel 19. I was enthralled by the beautiful colors, the heroics, the friendship and the great space battles. I loved watching the black/white alien fight the white/black alien and Kirk getting in between them to tell them how foolish they were to fight over such things.

So enter 1986, when TNG promos started showing on television. I still remember the first one I saw. I was in my pajamas, playing with some legos when I heard the music start playing and heard an announcer start talking about a new show called Star Trek: The Next Generation. I got excited, stood up and started jumping up and down, yelling into the hallway, "Mom, Mom! There's a new Star Trek! There's a new Star Trek!" I was tickled that I would get to see more space stories and heroics, and friendships in space.

This movie gives me that same feeling.
Except I'm not wearing pajamas, and I'm not six years old, but my God it makes me feel like a kid again.

So if for nothing else, thanks J.J., for letting me taste that anticipation once more.

This is the reason I have so much optimism for this movie as well.

you people that are offended that this movie exists, need to calm down. The sun will still rise, you still have family and friends, and your cherished DVD's from yesterday's Trek as well as the wonderful memories we all share...

now let's sit back and see if Team Abrams can do something different with Trek. If he fails or succeeds, I will still have my happiness. :)

Look how well it worked with Nick Meyer.

Star Trek VI--barely tolerable camp.

Star Trek IV--garbage (I would say "utter garbage" but V has that locked up).

Star Trek II--okay, you got me there.
