Brandon Routh may return to Superman after all

Well, with the news that Warner Bros. is rebooting the Superman franchise, everyone assumed that Superman Returns star Brandon Routh was out as well.

Apparently not.

According to DC Comics President Paul Levitz, Routh is very much in. "Last week Brandon Routh has come around the offices in New York and Los Angeles as of late to talk about Superman and what we want to do..."

He also confirmed that Warner Bros. is waiting for Christopher Nolan to sign the dotted line to return for another Batman installment, which they hope to have released July 2011, and will fast-track both the Superman reboot and the Green Lantern adaptation (which is apparently progressing well) IF and only IF Chris Nolan signs to direct the next Batman feature.

So...it appears that three superhero franchises lie in the hands of Chris Nolan. Batman, Superman and now Green Lantern. I wonder what will happen if Nolan does not agree to do another film, or if WB's badgering will force Nolan to give in and decline?

Sounds kind of risky, if you ask me.

Routh wasn't bad. He just had fuck-all to work with in Superman Returns. which should have been titled Lois Lane & Kid. Superman was little more than a glorified backdrop in that movie.

While I will defend Superman Returns with my dying breath, I sometimes have to concede that it hewed too closely to homages to Superman: The Movie. However, remember how hard it was to find a big screen Superman between Christopher Reeve & Brandon Routh? Superman is probably the hardest superhero of them all to cast right. But Routh's got what it takes and Warner Bros. should give him another chance (even if they are so artistically blind that they don't want Singer back too :( ).

Good. I thought he was a great Superman, and it would be a shame to see him get the short end of things because of the reboot.

So a Superman movie with Routh and Spacey that has nothing to do with the last movie starring Routh and Spacey?

Maybe they'll get Chris Nolan to do Superman and replace him with Brett Ratner for Batman.

I agree he was told to act and look like Reeve and he did so. Under new direction he could shine even more.

Its too bad he's not doing alot of big hits. Although that could be a double edged sword.

Right now Shawn Johnson is the hit of Iowa here

I couldn't stand SR, but I don't think Routh was the problem. I think Singer's direction was. So, I think giving him another shot isn't a bad thing. Hopefully he'll bulk up a little more and stop trying to channel Christopher Reeve and just do a new take on the character.

I've heard worse news today. Routh wasn't that bad in SR. He was a very good Clark Kent and I thought that he was a good Superman. I think it's a good fit.

I liked Routh in the role. I'm glad to hear this, but if they go with a total reboot...that can be a little strange.

i think he does well as superman. if they want him darker all they need to do is change the story. however, it being superman, i'm not sure how "dark" you can go with him as he is like the "all american" symbol... or at least he was. he's supposed to be wholesome and all that, not like batman who's got deep psychological issues.

Why am I not getting the thinking behind two other (potential) franchises hinging on another franchise continuing with its director? Am I too dense for Hollywood? :(

It's like politics!

"Alright, time to pass this bill that will allocate $10 billion to fixing our education system in every school that needs it."

"I'd like to add a rider to that bill that gives $400 million to second-rate research facilities to measure what the stench of cow manure does to the ozone layer."

Good. I thought he was fine in the role, and he'll probably be better off doing his own thing and not being directed to mimic Christopher Reeve.

The Batman franchise has already proven itself as a moneymaker. They want to continue it.

I have nothing against Brandon Routh, but this makes zero sense to me. They want a reboot but with the same actor? Do the powers at WB understand what the term "reboot" means?

Edited to add: But this is Paul Levitz, who runs the comics division, not WB proper. And he doesn't actually say much of anything other than that he was talking to Routh about Superman. Well, I can go talk to Levitz about Superman too. Doesn't mean I'm going to be playing him in the next movie. ;)

Good news--glad to hear it!

Someone refresh my memory--did the WB press release actually say they wanted to 'reboot' Superman, or did it say something a bit more vague regarding 'reintroducing' Superman?

Nolan's effect on Superman and Green Lantern seems to be only on Warner's release schedule. WB does not seem to want more than one DC film for each summer. So his estimate for a third Batman would certainly effect other DC films. Not that those films would be delayed until he is ready to return to Batman. Maybe those films could come sooner if a third Batman is many years away. Due to open summer slots. But that it just speculation.

More of the later. It was not really even a press release. Just some quotes from an interview with a Vice President at WB.

Oh and by the way -
The guy in my avatar, actor Jon Hamm, would make a great Hal Jordon/Green Lantern!
