A few more ASDB designs revisited

Since I've finally put to bed the Antares and the Korolev (more or less) I've made an effort to get a few more finalised to my satisfaction.

First off, the Apollo Class

The old plans were never up to much so I went back and redrew about 80% of it, tweaking the design to be a little closer to the Ambassador than it had previously been. Still needs some work, so I'd say it's about half done.

Next is the Deneva, which has always been a bit of a pain and I think my biggest mistake was in trying to make it look TOO functional and it ended up just looking busy, so I've streamlined the design a little.

And last of all, the Surak. More or lees sorted, just needs the other views.

Great update on the Apollo class. That's exactly what I think the ship should look like.

For the Deneva, although I like what you've done with it, there are two things that make it look just a bit too advanced for it's age: The runabout-style bridge, and the Ambassador-esque nacelles. I kinda envisioned the ship as having Connie nacelles, but that's just me. Also, I like that you've put the Nenebek-style escape pods behind hatches. Never did like that design for a Starfleet escape pod (especially since that wasn't it's original intention).

What can I say but :bolian:

An ASDB update usually makes my day

I love the Deneva-Class. More ships need the bottom platform for retrieving / deploying aqua-shuttles, medical anti-grav palettes / personnel, etc.

Awesome! Glad to see these updated. I've always loved this design for the Apollo.

:rommie:

Well I date this design in the first decade of the 24th century, so by that point the Connie refit is 30 year old technology and even the Excelsior is a good 15-20 years in the past, so making them too close to the connie doesn't make allot of sense. If you look at them from the side, you'll see they're actually stubby versions of the Excelsior nacelles, with a little Ambassador detailing thrown in, so I think it suits the period logically enough.

As for that hatches, they're actually workbee docks, though I like the logic of having the escape pods there too, so I'll include that in the next update.

I can't help that the nose looks like a scaled up Danube, though it is consistent with my Erewhon Class design and one might like to argue an aesthetic relationship with the Sydney & SD-103 shuttle.

I love the Deneva-Class. More ships need the bottom platform for retrieving / deploying aqua-shuttles, medical anti-grav palettes / personnel, etc.

I wouldn't say I had the aqua shuttle in mind, just a convenient way of off loading supplies to a colony without the bother of cargo transporters or workbees or for that matter loading extra bulky equipment and vehicles into the lower hold. For the record, I should point out the Raven have a similar ventral cargo door.

I thought this is what the Apollo class is supposed to look like?

And just in case anyone was thinking to dismiss this just because Mike Okuda thought it up  : If you do that, then you must also dismiss the very term Apollo class, as I believe he thought of that as well.

You are of course entitled to think what you like mate.

Whoa, whoa, back up there. I'm not slamming your designs, not at all. I think they are very well done.

I suppose those Vulcan transports could have any class name, now that I think of it. We now know the term 'Apollo class' exists - it appears on a starship status chart in TNG's final episode. I had forgotten about that part. Sorry for the confusion.

Don't worry mate, I never said you were. As for the Apollo name, even if that Vulcan design is call "Apollo-Class" it's not a Starfleet ship, unlike the Gage, so it's a moot point. It's the same reason that the Xhosa isn't the same design as the Hermes, despite both belonging to a class called 'Antares'.

A few more updates on the Deneva (the fore and aft views are just old place-holders for the moment) and a closer look at the re-designed landing gear.

Well this just shows how often I don't check my own threads!
No progress on this lot recently. The problem with having so many projects on the go, between the comic book/character related stuff, B5 stuff & Trek stuff I can totally forget about these things.
I'll probably get back around to them again at some point...maybe.
