Is Jackie Chan Hollywood's Asian version of the "magical negro?"

Holy shit I haven't heard Connie Chung's name in almost ten years.

Once again ... I've nothing against Asian Americans.... I just have to look at every problem cited, complaint made... and I am forced to look at it from the same perspective and insert- "Arab" instead of "Asian" in it all... and even then, half the time Good Will Riker, you are just mumbling on about crap.

Why, are they not Asian enough?

Well, you know, if you pair Lucy Liu up with an Asian actor, it's racism because it assumes only Asians can hook up with Asians and be with their own people for safety and security reasons. But if you pair Lucy Liu up with a white actor, it's racism because it shows that she's anti-Asian and she's going for the guy with the culturally-accepted looks.

Huh. So that's what Rush Limbaugh was referring to when he called Obama the "magical negro"

She can't win.

Well, I guess she could become a monk. Do the Buddhists allow women to be monks? Are there Buddhist nuns?

The I thought to myself "Steven Spielberg approved of this scene in this script? How would he like it if it was a bus full of kikes wearing yamikas! It's the year 2008 for crying out loud?"
You do realize that "kikes" is a highly offensive term and highly inappropriate for someone trying to claim some sort of moral outrage....

so- GWR---did you or did you not know?

OK, I'm not saying I agree with his thesis or reason for posting, but I'm not stupid enough to think he was using "kike" seriously and with hostile intent from his POV. It's pretty obvious he was using the derogatory to highlight what he thinks Spielberg's perspective would be about the person who would frame Jews in a very stereotypical manner like that. It was sarcastic, he's not trying to be racist against Jewish people. It just didn't come off right, like a lot of stuff on the net. So chill jus a teeny tad, m'k? :)

If anything it sounds like he's a bit over-sensitive to percieved racism, because I think he's seeing it in a few places it doesn't exist.

As far as the number of white actors goes, the largest majority in the USA is still by far white, English-speaking people. As long as film making is a business and they're trying to appeal (re: relate) to as many people as possible, we're going to see a lot more white people headlining movies. It's not racist, it's advertising demographics, it's purely mechanical. If half the white people disappeared tomorrow and the same people were making movies, they'd be making movies featuring Hispanics and black people all the time.

And black people certainly haven't stopped going to movies just because white people star in them. Hell, people around the world and of all races love all kinds of white American actors in their white-bread American films.

It's a long story, Biggles. If you wish to discuss it, I would be happy to in PM but not here.
biggles can borrow my The Joy Luck Club DVD anytime he wants to.

And, even then, I highly doubt that he will still get it.

^ Now he's informing everyone in Sci Fi & Fantasy of his intentions to boycott Iron Man.

This is a shout out to all Asian on this board -- in order not to offend Good Will Riker with Asian sterotypes, we must flunk out of math, be so lazy we'll be fired from a minimum wage job and treat our families so poorly they'll disown us.

Good Will Riker, no one should
Cry wolf in their neighborhood
But Riker just won't be undone
Prejudiced at everyone

There's a race card to the top
Victimization doesn't stop
Interracial's just no fair
That makes better guys everywhere

Justin Lin will reign supreme
Much to Lucy Liu's demise
They're always up for kimchi
Often with a side of rice

So join in the jubilee
Yellow fever's great, they'll all agree
You'll find in each calamity
The Asians' superiority

Huh, ah oh, oh ah oh, ah uh
Huh oh ah, ah oh, oh ah oh, uh uh

Good Will Riker, no one should
Cry wolf in their neighborhood
But Riker just won't be undone
You should realize his next attack will be you!

I fully believe that he meant it as a bigoted remark with hostile intent. The comment is a complete non sequitur that bears no relation with the depiction of Asians in the film. No one calls them racist names, they aren't stereotyped, there's no insult, period. So, where's the point of comparison between those examples? He just decided to take a swipe at Spielberg's background because he was angry, using the film, which Spielberg was only peripherally involved with anyway, as justification.

GWR has made bigoted remarks in the past, is obsessed with anti-Asian racism even where none exists, and thinks Asian women shouldn't be going out with men of other races. He's a bigot himself, and like many bigots he hides behind getting overly offended at things relating to him, while saying things ten times worse towards others.

I think the problem (which is a non-problem, IMO) is that Lucy Liu is not playing an Asian in her films. She is playing an Asian-American, which she is. She grew up in this country, went to school in this country, and dated boys in this country. If they dressed her up in Chinese drag and gave her a traditional Chinese boyfriend, that would be stereotyping.

By not allowing her to be what she is, you are exhibiting bigotry, GWR, not the people who employ her.

I think this also goes to another cultural difference here. GWR has stated in his myriad dating threads over in Misc that he's only interested in dating Asian women, which is certainly his prerogative. But now he extends it to all Asians — Lucy Liu is a "bad" Asian because she pairs up with white guys in her films.

What's being promoted here is reverse racism; it's the same nonsense as people questioning whether Barack Obama is "black enough." So despite all those years of fighting so that blacks and whites (and by extension, other ethnic groups) could date and intermarry, suddenly if you date/marry outside your ethnic group, you're a bad person.

I say fuck it. Date people you're compatible with in terms of intelligence, personality, interests, etc. If they happen to be the same ethnic group as you, that's great. If they're from a different ethnic group, that's great too. Life's too short for that sort of small-mindedness.

You know, a good while ago, someone here on this board (I think it was Elmo maybe) posted a thread all about reverse-racism. I don't recall the details to well but I'm pretty sure you fall into at least part of that category GWR. You are a reverse-racist, searching for reasons to see it everywhere you go. Get a fucking grip already.

With regards to you and Sonia,

Admittedly I missed the initial part while scanning this thread. That's a warning, Good Will Riker. Its use was uncalled for and we all would appreciate you choose your words more carefully when attempting to creatively rant.
