Confusion about the books.

Talking about incursion into the Neatural Zone, which was after said-war.

"After a hundred years, Mr. Styles, who knows what will a Romulan ship look like?"

Yes, I know about Final Frontier - really liked all the April stuff.. but hard to go through a second time. It takes away from the dramatic situation of BOT.

Huh? Really?

Then maybe ST tie-ins are not for you. April's mission was classified, IIRC, so it's not as if Kirk's crew knew what happened that day in April's time.

And for most early ST fans, they would have seen "Balance of Terror" on TV many times before they read "Final Frontier".

Wouldn't a repeat viewing of BOT also take away from the dramatic situation on BOT?

Dood, I've read a good number of tie-ins, several which I'd say were better than the episodic material that came after TOS (and some better than TOS).

Yes, it was classified - but thankfully it doesn't take center stage in Best Destiny, which is a sequel to the book.

No a repeat viewing wouldn't take away from the dramatic SITUATION of BOT. It may take away from the feeling but not the situation.

The situation is
1. No one has seen or heard from the Romulans in a 100 years.
2. Interstellar war is at risk.
3. The Romulans are testing the Federation's strength.

If it was classified - wouldn't some of the data they got back be given to ships patrolling the NZ? Some sort of 'here's a long-range scan of a Romulan ship we saw - it's general configuration', as it seemed, no one had any clue what they looked like or what the ships were capable of. If you had a ship patrolling the NZ, you'd want to brief that captain on what they'd be facing.

The book just doesn't hold up with that, I don't think, even though I love all of the April bits, and it lovingly describes the freshly made Enterprise.

I got thrown out of the story in Final Frontier when the plot hinged on the revelation that someone absolutely had to be a Romulan spy because he separated his food on the dish. If that was the case, a whole bunch of my friends and relatives are Romulans....

^^As I recall, the tell wasn't that he separated the different foods on his plate, but that he insisted on eating them one at a time, finishing one off before moving on to the next.

Whatever. My point still stands.

I do that!
I wish I had the ears to back it up... =/

Well, then, apparently I'm a Romulan.

Ah, if my Aunty Pat was there, she'd have told him to stop playing with his food and to just eat it. "You'll eat it and, what's more, you'll like it."
