Well, if it's "your" fault, it's their own stupid fault for trusting a message board and/or Memory Beta.

Nah. It's their fault, either for falling into the same trap and not treating the info from S&S accordingly, or for just sniping info from other sites to fill their "news" quota.

:wtf: Why would you characterize it that way when, as an insider to the process, you already know that it isn't a question of what Pocket "wants," but the consequence of an imperfect system that requires information to go out before it can be finalized?

I suppose, Marco, I'm characterizing it that way given the nature of the market I work in where I have to give retailers accurate information so they can invest their money wisely on the products they choose to sell. I'm probably biased from two directions -- one, I used to be a retailer myself, though of a different product, and two, now I'm the person giving retailers information on the products. Knowing that what I get is inaccurate is frustrating, because I know that I'm ultimately doing everyone a disservice, from Pocket to the retailers, by using the text that Pocket has provided. I didn't mean for it to sound harsh, and I know the situation vis a vis the advance text is not deliberate.

Let's just say I'm venting about a more generalized situation.

The harshness I couldn't care less about; it was the deliberate mischaracterizing of the matter that I found puzzling.

FWIW when Unreality started Trekweb.com lifted my post here word for word a week after I posted it instead of using the "press release" the sitemaster had send them even before I posted the info here. :borg:

"deliberate mischaracterizing" of what? Allyn is perfectly describing the situation. Pocket is sending out wrong information, and I wonder, where do they get that information they send out? Perhaps if the editors provided them with correct information in the first place, this wouldn't be an issue?

Oh but please do continue criticizing others who have nothing to do with the situation you've created. It's really rather entertaining.

Let it be said that I don't, in any way, shape, or form, blame Marco or the other Pocket editors for the inaccurate text.

At the same time, I don't believe that I was "deliberate[ly] mischaracterizing" the situation; what I have to work with is what Pocket's Sales department sends me.

That said, at least Pocket provides something. Other publishers aren't so considerate. :)

And the reality is that I'll drop Marco or Kirsten an e-mail when I have to deal with Full Circle, assuming the same lousy text above is what Pocket's Sales Department sends me.

Just to be clear, I'm not in any way as pissed off about this as I've evidently come across. I called your post into question because I couldn't understand why you'd think that anybody at Pocket would want less than accurate info disseminated, since you already knew the unfavorable circumstances surrounding the creation of that material.

I really wasn't angry about the post or put off by what you called its "harshness." I was just genuinely confused by your interpretation. So if you took it any other way, I apologize.

I sympathize. Before I was hired to be an editor for Pocket, I wrote the catalog for DC Comics. Often I had to go to press with only tentative information for many of the titles we were soliciting, and the final product sometimes bore little resemblence to the catalog descriptions. It was frustrating, yes. But I know from that experience that the situation with Star Trek solicitation copy is hardly unique, but rather represents a systemic problem in certain aspects of publishing.

    Voyager: Full Circle

    by Kristen Beyer

A DESTINY-tie in. The post-series Voyager novels return with a new author, String Theory's Kristen Beyer. Following the crew over a span of three years, Full Circle will take us from the Spirit Walk duology to after the events of the galaxy-shattering DESTINY trilogy, including the death of Admiral Janeway. What next for Voyager's crew?

    there you go.

Take out Janeway's death and you're set, for VOY readers that might be too much of a spoiler.

And may I say that Pocket should actually talk to their editors before sending out this pre-blurb so that the info is as accurate as it can be rather than just making stuff up.

It's not that they're making stuff up; it's that the blurbs often have to be based on preliminary outlines that might be subject to revision later on. Sometimes a book's plot stays pretty much unchanged from initial outline to final text, and in that case the catalog blurbs are pretty accurate. (I actually liked the catalog blurb for Spider-Man: Drowned in Thunder a bit better than the actual cover blurb, and I mostly wrote the cover blurb!) But if a book goes through more changes along the way, then the final version can very greatly from the initial outline. (See the Janus Gate trilogy, where the cover blurbs based on the outlines weren't revised before publication and thus ended up being very different from what's actually in the books.)
