My sons and I have but it's been a while. I've read that there are variations on the game but haven't reaaly sought them out. I glanced at the link above and found it quite interesting, but to be completely frank, it's more of a decoration. I have it set up where the movable boards are in the four outer most positions, two up and two down, with the pieces in their starting positions.

I tend to think it will be present, at least as some sort of set dressing. I think it would be odd to have a movie about Spock without it.
