THE FORCE UNLEASHED - discussion

Yep, I'm going to Best Buy (I have a $10 gift card) tomorrow to pick up my copy for the Xbox 360, too. Screw the reviews, I enjoyed the demo and look forward to more. :techman:

Did I mention that was an awesome avatar you have there. Skywalker ?

I'll grab it tomorrow out of sheer boredom with recent PS3 games. GTAIV was the only thing decent lately, and even that was overated to all hell. "Best game ever" etc - what a load of bull.

Picked up a copy today and I'm enjoying it. So far, I've completed the Vader prologue mission and the first mission as Starkiller. I have one issue with the storyline as it plays out in the game versus the way it was depicted in the novelization. The prologue mission shows how Starkiller came to be under Vader's tutelage, but I thought it was more interesting in the novelization to find out Starkiller's origins at the same time he does, even though there was definite foreshadowing as to the details.

Yeah, I've also gotten through the prologue and the first mission. The prologue was very cool, but I too think it would have been more dramatically interesting if we didn't learn Starkiller's background right off the bat.

Picked it up tonight, played through the first three levels (Vader prologue, Tie Fighter factory, Raxus Prime).

Pretty entertaining game. Mostly hack&slash, yes, but it's hack&slash in environments with some pretty gorgeous art design. The Raxus Prime junk planet was just crazy beautiful.

The boss battle at the end of the third level was an absolute bitch on hard, though. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing - the character design for the boss is pretty great so he's fun to fight - but I had to replay the battle about 15 times to finally kill him. Happily there's a mid-battle save point.

I really like how Starkiller gets a new costume every level. It keeps him interesting to look at.

Got the 360 version...

I've made it to Felucia after the bullshit Raxus Prime boss fight and I've got to say this game has become a chore. None of the promises made in the tech demos were kept. The story's boring so far. And the fighting is just bullshit. Did these guys even watch the movies? Or play the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series? Lightsabers are one-hit kill weapons on everything but the most heavily armed opponents. Three-four hits to kill a nacent rebel? Weak.

And checkpoint saves shouldn't even be an option for games nowadays. I do not find it amusing to fight the same bunch of assholes I fought ten minutes ago because some rebel sucker punched me with a nightstick while I was stringing a lame-ass combo together on his buddy right before the save point, nor do I want to watch that forced animation/cutscene again.

Jedi Knight Outcast, while not as pretty, was so much more fun -especially when you unlocked the dismemberment cheat and dominate mind. Nothing better than making a stormie shoot his buddy then jump off cloud city. Or getting in a saber fight with six Dark Jedi and every hit kills so you're chopping these guys into lunch meat and Force pushing their remains into bottomless pits, while using actual skill to parry/dodge their attacks.

I'll finish it eventually, cause I dropped sixty bucks on it, but damn, what a disappointment. And yeah, yeah, I got my hopes up, but WTF, it seemed like they were putting some actual effort into this thing, yet it looks and plays like something that came out two years ago. If it wasn't called Star Wars, no one would be buying this piece of warmed over poo.

DMM, Euphoira & Havok = Smoke & Mirrors

Rent, don't buy, guys.

I did enjoy the demo to a point, but even that 30 minute snapshot of it wasn't without its flaws.

Every review I've read (and I've read more than ten) says pretty much the same thing - that it's worth playing for the story if you're a fan of both trilogies, but as a game it just doesn't hold up.

So I'm not going to bother until it's down to £15. Gonna get Infinite Undiscovery instead to tide me over for Fable 2 and Fallout 3.

I was psyched about this game, but I only play PC. So I won't be experiencing this particular game, unless I buy it for wii, and give it to a friend, and spend dubious amounts of time bugging the shit out of him at his place. :)

Well I just played the game for the last 3 hrs and had a good time.
The scenery is absolutely gorgeous.
The story is good so far.
The game play is fun enough.
BUT, I can see where some of the "meh" reviews come into play.
The game was hyped differently that it actually is.

I didn't expect a hack and slash type of game but it's not a bad thing.

I did get very frustrated trying to get a couple of those cube thinggies.
The one in the tie fighter factory ,where you have to fill in the slots and jump way up to the catwalk and in the cave looking area with the big spinning gear.
I'm not a huge fan of jumping from area to area, It's just soooo fun getting within 10 feet of an object and falling. Rinse, wash, repeat a hundred times till you get it.

I'll give it a solid 8-10 so far.

This is what's irritating me right now. After defeating the first Junk Titan on Raxus Prime and bringing down the makeshift bridge, I keep falling to my death whenever I try to jump down to the bridge.

I think I'm near the end of the game, playing it on hard to unlock the even harder difficulty. I don't mind rekilling the same stuff after I die, it goes towards those 360 rewards things and it goes towards your leveling.

I don't like how it wasn't a big deal going from the dark side to the light side, would have liked some better story for hit and some more plot about it. The first couple of bosses did a crap job of foreshadowing it and then there wasn't enough payout for my liking.

The fight against Darth Maul was fucking awesome, and extremely fucking hard. But, like I said, AWESOME. The whole discussion when the robot said "I don't like being him" and StarKiller says "I don't think he does either" was a nice fanboy moment for me.

I liked the parallels between the Vader/Palps confrontation with Starkiller and how it went the oppsite from Vader/Palps at the end of Jedi, inclucing the cuts to Vaders face.

I've been stuck for the past hour trying to bring down the stardestroyer and royally sucking at it.

The game is beautiful, and since my 360 game collection is rather small at the moment, I definately needed a good hack and slash. Especially a Star Wars one. Afterall, I did buy the original xbox on the day KOTOR came out just to play that, before discovering the other awesome games for the system. I'll be honest and say how this game would have benefitted more as an RPG ala KOTOR, but I'm still having a lot of fun. I'm not sure if people have mentioned if there's no hope for a PC port, because I definately would rebuy it, just for the possible mods that people could make. I would like to play around with it myself and see what I could mod, definately a lot of potential. But I think people have said no PC verison. I can only hope.

I'm playing on the hardest level as well.

May I make a few hack and slash suggestions?

Conan The Barbarian was a lot of fun.
Viking: Battle for Asgard was pretty good.
You can get both at around $20.00 each

And after playing the demo for Ninja Gaiden II, I plan on picking that one up.

I was not originally a fan of these types of game but they are really growing on me.
Have fun!

I started out of the Sith Master difficulty, but my game-fu wasn't strong enough to take down the boss of Raxus Prime (I couldn't get a good rhythm down and he was just too fast) that I switched down to Sith Warrior. It is a pretty awesome game so far and I am really enjoying the story. It defiantly puts a bit of a twist on the OT so far.

^Yeah, the Raxus Prime boss is really, really tough - I found him harder than most of the later bosses, in fact.

I found that you deal the most damage to him by

1. Electrocuting him
2. X, Y, Y immediately afterwards (the move where you charge your lightsaber, swing, then swing up to hurl the enemy through the air.

does quite a bit of damage to him.

I had to wuss out and change the difficulty for the end of the game, so I'll start my next playthrough tonight if I've nothing else to do. I like how you retain everything, points, levels, crystals, outfits. Now i'll go on the hunt for all the crystals.

Make sure you get all the cubes in the death star, that's where the black saber crystal is and Cool jedi robes are.

Btw, Crashdown makes an awesome Starkiller

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll definately be picking up Ninja Gaiden, the version for Xbox was one of my favorite games for the console, Top 20 easy. Game was hard as hell, but packed with awesome.
