Star Trek: Independence

Neutrino

Lieutenant
I always thought it might be interesting to have a series based in perhaps the year 2460. The series would focus on a collection of worlds within the UFP that decides that the UFP has become too large and can't properly address the needs of its members. These few worlds, maybe about 20 or so (main worlds and colonys) decide to break free and create their own Federation of planets. These breakaway worlds causes fear and upheavle within the rest of the UFP and other worlds begin to consider switching organisations.
The series is set on the point of view of this new organisation and most of the series is set on a Starship.

I'm not so sure about show premises that key off the inner workings of the Federation, because the Fed is such a black box, which has never really been developed or explored. Star Trek isn't about the Federation, it's about the boundaries of the Federation and what's beyond.

What exactly does the Federation do for member worlds, anyway? We don't even know that. Defense against agressive neighboring empires seems to be about it. And the Fed worlds damn well need that defense, given Romulans, Klingons, Borg, the Dominion, who knows what else. Split off from the Fed and you're sitting ducks for the next big baddie to come along, or just one of the existing ones. I guarantee the Dominion would swoop right in like a hawk on an injured prairie dog. Who'd be fool enough to risk that? And if they did, wouldn't they be asking for it?

I think it could be interesting. Like you said, we don't know much about the federation itself. All our experience has been with starfleet, and although there has been some, there have been very little politics involved. I think one thing we've been missing from the show is a more... dark side of the federation. I don't mean evil, but there's always going to be differences in opinions, one person thinks his was is right so he starts setting things up behind the scenes to get things done.

One thing I think this would need is a bit more continuity from one episode to the next. Not to the extent that it's like one really REALLY long movie, but a definate plot line. DS9 kind of did that, I've noticed this from going back and watching the old episodes and it actually gives you clues to whats going to happen later.

B5 was another show that did that, but I think it was a little to much. I love that show, but if you miss an episode you're lost.

Wasn't this already done with the Maquis

Yes, but wouldn't it be interesting to see a Starfleet/Federation on the precipice of dealling with an uncertain new faction that wants to secede from the charter & others' political arrangements to attempt to make it on their own much as the Federation colonists did under Cardassian rule? I'd like to see how Neutrino would play this out in a screenplay or a prose fan fic.
