I just discovered this little gem from Google and am tinkering with it now, seems like a good program for beginner 3d modelers and was wondering if anyone here has used it at all in their design work. If so woul you mind posting it here so I can see what the program is capable of?

must admit been using it for quite awhile and it's ok for buildings dosen't seem so good for spheres though but that could be just me being a bit thick. the program is pretty simple compared to the likes of blender which i could never seem to get to grips with. havent done any star trek ships yet mostly buildings almost finished a babylonian type temple.

lol I was just wondering about spheres. looks like it has potential for interior spaces like a bridge with the nifty little offset button.

Ive tried Blender before.... Lets just say that a bit beyond my skill level. id love to see your building when its finished though.

sure actually i'll have a dig round my hard drive see what early models i have

ok managed to find a couple of early models i warn you that aren't the best around and theres very few curves in them
the first two are based off a Babylonia style building

the third is a modern police hq of my own design

to be honest the best way of seeing what google is capable of is to look at the sketch up 3D warehouse theres quite a few models in there

Dude, if you want to see the potential of the program check out this model:

I'm seriously in envy of this guys skills...

Galactic Scooby, that's some nice work too! I'd like to know more about your avatar though...
thanks for the comment on the pics.
as for the avatar baxart who posted on this forum, did the original drawing of an orion slave girl i just used it with his permission

Wow!:techman:

That must have taken you ages to do, I can only do minor block work and that takes me a lifetime.

You should do a master class!

Architectural firms like the one I work for now routinely use SketchUp during the concept design phase to give clients a rough idea of what their space or building will look like. This representation inevitably changes due to structural/code/engineering considerations. If a project's budget will support it, the SketchUp model can be updated regularly as the Schematic Design, Design Development, and Construction Documents phases proceed.
If you know nothing about how buildings are built, but are proficient with SketchUp, you can easily score a job with an Architecture firm right now.

Thanks! Yes, it did take quite a bit of time, over a year working on it on-an-off. It helped that a lot of it is duplicated; once I created one thing, the rest came relatively easily.

my current modus operandi is to draw it in autocad and then import to sketchup which has significantly better rendering, coloring, transparency,
and which does perspective- which my version of autocad doesn't.

I hear about blender now and then- must admit i can't afford anything -t the version of autocad i have is a discontinued 1998 version or some such that the old owner had replaced and no longer needed.

But the combination works really well- i mean sketchup is whacky in terms
of trying to do anything with exactness. Theres no array function. You can't
zoom "down" into scale, just upwardor through the object. I mean sketchup is frankly lousy at actually drawing things in. But its great for file sharing,
its free, i can get freinds to go get it and maybe they can do stuff-

Until i make big dough i am afraid thats where its at for me.

But hey, still makes allright stuff- not as kewl looking as some of the art i see- but nothing to scoff at neither.

that bridge design does look pretty detailed--- WOW...

I use sketchup all the time for my comic work. It's a great tool.

You can also import 3ds models into sketchup, and export sketchup models to 3ds, but everytime i import a 3ds to sketchup my system freezes. This happen with anyone else?

cheers

You do know Blender is free, open license like Linux?

www.blender.org

I would use it if I could wrap my head around it.

Racer X, those chairs are awesome. After having played with Sketchup for a couple weeks now, I know how hard compound curved surfaces are.
