The Middleman

Aaah!! Vampire ventriloquist dummies! O-kayyy... Cute idea. And I love Wendy rattling off all the vampire comics, movies, and shows she's intimately familiar with. (But three Canadian vampire-detective series? All I can think of that fits that bill is Forever Knight, since Angel was not Canadian. Maybe that Moonlight thing I've never watched is one of them?) Not to mention her totally non-sequitur paeans to Usagi Yojimbo.

And of course the obligatory Dracula name-drops, including the ventriloquist named Renfield and the rest home named for John Seward. Plus a lot of overt references to the history and legend of Vlad the Impaler.

The MM-Lacey romance is very sweet. I was touched by the revelation of their true love, and I'm usually not that sentimental. Score one more for Keeslar's skill at creating a very sympathetic character. And now I'm wondering about this other woman he's in love with. Some secret from his past, no doubt.

I'm wondering, though, about MM's claim that their wedding wasn't binding because it was an evil ceremony. The participants were under evil control, but the priest was on the level. Although I guess legally, the priest business is more a formality these days and it's the contracts that make it official -- or is it?

Let's not forget Lacey...Brit Morgan is quite a good actress. Funny, touching, ditzy, charming. She's great.

I like Natalie, but I don't think she could do what Brit does.

I was trying to figure out references...and except for the Raiders quote, I couldn't see a pattern.

It was fun though.

I'm lukewarm about her overall, but she does have good chemistry with Keeslar.

I don't recall a Raiders quote. Most of the refs were to Dracula lore, as I said, but this time the overt references outnumbered the subtle name-dropping nods.

Forever Knight, Blood Ties, and Kindred: The Embraced. Maybe.

I think they are married, but MM won't do anything about it. For whatever reason, he thinks it's best not to pursue Lacey. If they do cancel the show, I hope they get those two lovebirds together at the end. They are so cute.

Cool episode -- in part because I got just about all the references. Two main sources this time, Die Hard (Nakitomi Protocol and various overt references) and Doctor Who (with name-drops including Agent Herriot, Lethbridge-Stewart, McCrimmon College, and the Treaty of Periperpugilliam, and one more that I don't remember). An eclectic mix. Plus we got a bit of a Star Trek: The Motion Picture reference in re: a Voyager probe possibly gaining sentience and returning to judge its makers.

So what do you want to bet that Manservant Neville is some sort of evil Middleman-analogue? It makes sense; Tyler was originally a candidate for Middle-apprentice, so it follows that he'd draw the attention of a similar organization. And if there's a similar organization, it must be an evil counterpart. I suppose there's a chance that Fatboy Industries could actually be O2STK, but I doubt it. I mean, Tyler is a love interest that the protagonist is happy with, so obviously something horrible has to happen to him by season's end. He's either gonna get killed or turn to evil. Or turn to evil, then realize what he's done and get himself killed to redeem himself and save Wendy.

And I bet those "YouMaster" (sp?) cubes that 1 in 25 humans now owns -- but whose actual purpose remains unexplained -- are going to be crucial in Neville's plan for (inevitably) world domination. Maybe some sort of mind control devices, judging from the name.

It's a pity this show's budget required Ida's nanoscale interior to look like a bunch of rusty maintenance tunnels. But the brain sequence was cool -- it was interesting to see a nicer version of Ida, and to see what the actress really looks like underneath the fright wig and heavy glasses. (I'm surprised Wendy didn't question her about her improved attitude.)

Of course, the highlight was Wendy in her underwear. Natalie Morales is a very... very... fit... young woman. She looked pretty good in the black catsuit too.

Dubby's "Code 47" and MM's reaction were really sweet. And I'm glad she described him as a father figure, since with the "scrubbing" scene and all, I was afraid for a moment that they were going to hint at an attraction between them, and that's a route I don't want them to go.

How many episodes are left in the season? It feels like they're building toward the finale.

Darn, now I want a hot dog.

Next week's episode is the season finale and concerns parallel universes.

I SOOOO agree on not wanting them to go the overused cliched route of attraction between Dubby and MM. That just smacks of "been there, done that" so very many times, and this series has made a habit of avoiding plot devices like that. I rather took that shower scrubbing scene to be a parody of the "bio decontamination" silliness from "Enterprise".

Interesting and creative ideas on where they might be going with FatBoy Industries and Badger's ... err.. Neville's role and company. We kept sensing that he was up to no good, though we couldn't pin down in what way.

As it turns out I just caught my first episode of The Middleman with the new episode that premiered tonight and I really liked it. I caught all of the references, especially the Who reference obviously. Now I just have to go back and catch up on the other episodes before the season (hopefully not series) finale next week.

Has there been any more news on the status of the show? This is a fun quirky show in the vein of Eureka and Pushing Daisies that is quite refreshing in a media environment dominated by "darker and gritter = better". Perhaps the show would do well on Sci-Fi... ?

Yup. :) She's so my type but I doubt I'm the only one on this board to express that particular sentiment.

As for your theory of an evil Middleman analogue, if you go to http://themiddleblog.livejournal.com/ and scroll down about halfway (after the entry about M&Ms), you might find some interesting photos.

Beware of spoilers!

My son clued me into this last week, and I was riveted by this picture in particular. (spoilers! Be wary!)

It seems your instincts were right on the mark, Christopher! But it worries me a bit that they are setting Wendy up for some cruel twist. I'm sincerely enjoying the fun nature of this series, and I feel that is its greatest strength. Here's hoping they don't go too far down any paths of darkness.

I'm going to the Middleman panel this weekend. Hopefully, they'll have some information on the 2nd season.

I don't want a romance between Dubby and MM. I just about cried last night when she said he'd filled that father-figure role for her.

Tyler is growing on me. He's still too perfect, but they make a really cute couple. Too bad I think he's working for the enemy now. Sorry. It's Badger. He always makes me suspicious of his intentions.

At Dragon Con? Color me envious! I'm hoping to make it back next year.

I honestly doubt that will ever happen, particularly after Dubby's divulging that to MM. There is no way they can go back on that, not without moving to Showtime or HBO. I rather saw him has a big brother to her, as opposed to a father figure, though.

I have a bad feeling they are being set up as being adversaries in some way, but that may just be the cliche-monster in me rearing its ugly face.

BTW... don't forget Sheppard was also a terrorist in "24", albeit a somewhat short-lived one.

That crossed my mind too, but it didn't really play that way. Heck, I don't care why they did it, I'm just glad they did it...

Me too. Except brothers and sisters usually don't get along that well in my experience...

MM mentions the Zygons.

(Sometimes I feel like the show is one great big nerd test...one I don't mind passing, though.)

This was a great episode. I loved the Code 47 to MM, and Kesslar's reaction...wow...just wow.

I really do hope this gets a 2nd season, it's wonderfully fun and has a big heart.

I also agree I think FatBoy is being set up as some sort of Evil version of the MM. Awesome.

Could this become our generations Batman?

Trust me... I am most decidedly NOT complaining! :techman:

You haven't met my kids.

Yeah, that one slipped my mind too, but it wasn't the one I meant. When MM introduced himself and Dubby to the NASA guys, he said "I'm Agent ____ and this is Agent Herriot." I didn't catch what name he used for himself. Although given the model being followed, it probably had to be one of the following:

Chesterton
Wright (either Barbara or Polly)
Taylor
Chaplet
Jackson
Waterfield
Shaw
Yates
Benton
Grant
Smith
Sullivan
Jovanka
Brown (though they already referenced Peri)
Bush
McShane (although Ace didn't get that surname until the novels)

Or possibly Tyler, Jones, or Noble.

Come to think of it, it may well have been Sullivan. I have the impression it was three syllables, but it wasn't unusual enough to stick with me, and Sullivan's the only one that fits those parameters.

We should still have last night's episode on the DVR, so I will double check for that name some time this evening.
