Location shooting

According to the Wikipedia article on the movie, shooting was to take place on 11 sets at the Paramount lot, with location shots at Long Beach, California State University, Bakersfield, and Iceland. I had heard that the Iceland shoot had been nixed, so I was surprised to still see it listed.

Does anyone know if they really did any work there or not?

Iceland never went off, from what I recall. We've seen photos of shooting taking place at the Dodger Stadium parking lot, at Cal State University Northridge outside the library, and at a power-generating facility near Lebec, just off the Grapevine. We've seen reports of location shooting near Bakersfield. There may have been others, but those are all I can remember.

Edit:

Re: Iceland

This report (Nov. 7, 2007) spoke of tentative plans for second-unit shooting only in Iceland, while this one (March 21, 2008) seemed to indicate that scouting for locations occurred but a decision was ultimately made not to do any shooting there.

Is any location shooting being used for scenes of Vulcan and if so, where?

Do we know what they wanted the Iceland locations for?

I'm just speculating, but I wouldn't be surprised if Iceland was to be used as "Vulcan".

There are lava fields in Iceland that stretch from horizon to horizon and look a little like an alien world. NASA used some of these lava fields to train the Apollo astronauts back in the 1960s becuase it looked a little like the Moon.

It also has black sand beaches, which looks very striking, but not necessarily very Vulcan-like (although we never saw a Vulcan beach, did we?)

Has it been confirmed whether or not the location shooting that took place in Bakersfield were in fact for scenes depicting a young James and Sam Kirk in Iowa?

I'm fairly certain that is the case. I remember reading that they felt Bakersfield looked enough like Iowa for the scene to be believable.

Thanks :) I really hope that it is in fact used for the "Kirk farm" 'cause that is a part of Kirk's life I have always wanted to see :techman:

Me, too, although I hoped they would've used the real Riverside, IA, instead.

Maybe if they had needed to shoot more "Iowa" footage than they did, it would've been worth it. As is, I think only a very short scene involving the two young Kirk boys in a car was shot there.
It's reported they put over $2 million into the Kern County economy doing the shoot. Filming the scene in Iowa would've probably cost a lot more than that.
Although being a native Iowan who lived not far from Riverside, I see it as an opportunity lost. And, hey, if Riverside didn't work out, they could've gone up by Decorah and filmed the Kirk farmstead at a very picturesque spot once used for another movie almost twenty years ago. The two Kirk boys could've used the field for tossing around a baseball. :)

I'm pretty sure it was. I remember because a news crew went out there to film a story and they showed the car in the background.
