I've never seen UFO or Space: 1999 would you guys recommend I check them out if I get the chance?

Yes - and in that order. Space 1999 grew out of plans for a second year of UFO set on Moonbase. UFO's the most adult of the Anderson output, even more so than Journey to the Far Side of the Sun (aka Doppleganger) which is about to come out on DVD in the UK (I think it's been out in the US for some time)
If you get into them, then check out the original novels - E.C. Tubb's Earthfall is a wonderful rethinking of Space 1999

That one was never published in the USA, and is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to get. Fanderson sells a new edition to members of the fan club for a reasonable price, but fan club membership is like US$75 a year, and it all has to be done by post. They don't do online sales or memberships. Like it was still 1999 or something.:rommie:

I know all this, because I was looking into trying to obtain that book yesterday. I was completely put off by the amount of trouble and time it takes just to obtain a simple 180-pg paperback!

In the past, Fanderson has allowed members to place orders for nonmembers, and sometimes people in groups like the Yahoo Space: 1999 group will offer to place an order. It's been a couple years since anyone in that group has done so, I think, probably because there hasn't been much new stuff from Fanderson.

ETA: I'm not a Fanderson member myself, but benefited from a group order organized by someone who I think has left the Yahoo group. But if you check Gerry Anderson/Space: 1999 groups, you may find someone who can help. If the book is still in print, anyway...
