Max Payne Trailer

I caught the trailer for Max Payne while out watching another film last night.

I have to say, I'm rather shocked. First off, I didn't think there would ever be a Max Payne film that doesn't have Uwe Boll attached. As much as I love the games, the property just isn't that hot. Second, I'm shocked to see Mark Wahlberg in the title roll. Though I do think he's a good actor, and definetly looks the part.

What does everybody else think of the trailer? I personally don't have high hopes for the success of this film, given the fact that the game wasn't a huge hit, and is quite a few years old. Also, the game rips off more than a few films and pulp sources - so making a film based on a game that rips off other sources seems like a bad idea. Sort of like making a game based on Doom 3, or something.

I liked the trailer and I really enjoy playing the game. The nightmare scenes from MP2 always freak me out.

I'm excited about the movie. I always though the games had fascinating stories. Bullet-time and various gun acrobatics have been done to death in recent movies, but I always like the stories. The noir-comic style I thought was really cool, not to mention the parts of the dream sequences where Max realized he was in a comic book or a game
it's funny but at the same time it illustrates the psychological effects of the valkyr drug

I think if this movie is going to work, it needs to keep the deadpan, slightly over-the-top narration by Payne ("They were all dead. The final gunshot was the exclamation mark on everything that had led to this point.") which, from the looks of the trailer, it has, as well as that slightly self-aware sense that the game had. And, of course, the awesome crime noir theme and good action.

Get all of those right and the movie might just work.

Max Payne is one of the greatest video games ever made. It's story telling is second to none. It's action never gets old. And it's themes and characterization are amazing. It's a masterpiece, a work of art. It has the depth of a book, the non-stop actionof a John Woo movie, the self-awareness of a Joss Whedon show, and the hip style of Mickey Spilane story. It's one of those games you just have to break out time and again and play beginning to end. It's treasure house of excitement and awesomeness.

So, yes I am very excited for this movie. Considering it's written by the guy who does The Sheild and Sam Lake, the writer of the games, I have high expectations for it. They better not screw this up.

Some of the casting I find questionable though. Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis are decent enough, but I would have prefered someone more broody and edgy. Clive Owen with an American accent would be perfect. I don't know if I can buy Kunis as Mona, the ultimate sexy femme fatale. I'll wait and see. The only thing I don't like is Ludacris as Jim Bravura. Bravura's this grizzled, old badass Jim Gordon type in the game and I'm not sure I like the idea of some shitty rapper playing him. If the movie is good, then I can live with it though.

Hopefully if the movie is successful they can finally greenlight the third game.

I saw this on the net and was impressed, when I saw it in the theater I giggled like a schoolgirl. I mean it's hilariously over the top, and I sort of doubt general audiences will "get it", it's like someone's making the movie just for me!
