The Way I'm Going To See It..

Nardpuncher

Rear Admiral
Here's the way I want to be before I see Trek XI:

Nardpuncher: Hey Pablo, Remember that TV show Star Trek?
Pablo: Yeah, it was in the 60s right?
Nardpuncher: Yeah, with all the wacky aliens and stuff and that cool ship, and Spock.
Pablo: What about it?
Nardpuncher: Well, I heard they're making it into a movie!
Pablo: Wow...will they have those same guys in it?
Nardpuncher: No...they're a little too old...they have new actors in it.
Pablo: Sounds like fun...they haven't made a show like that for ages!

You see...I want to pretend that ( now don't get me wrong) that TNG, DS9, Voy and Enterprise never happened. Not because I don't like them...but it will be neat to go in as though this movie was the first Trek since, well, the animated series.

Yeah, I'm essentially going to disconnect as far as possible from Trek before I see this movie because I want to go in as if it were the first Trek ever.

Oh boy, I can see myself having to elaborate on that a lot in a minute.

While you are having a good attitude towards this, the line "Well, I heard they're making it into a movie!" stuck to me. Didn't this already happen, with ST:TMP? :)

That's just crazy enough to work!

Of course:lol: But I'm pretending even that movie and the ones after never happened either.

That's probably good, too. I remember when Superman Returns came out, it was hard not to compare the new actors with the old. But I am tempted to see how well Pine does Captain Kirk. He may look the part, but is he going to sound the same? :)

I might have myself hypnotized to forget everything Trek I have seen till now. Hypnotoad, I need you.

Nah, that was a Motion Picture. This is just a movie. :)

I simply can't help myself. I always knit everything together into my own personal continuity, and rationalize any gross contradictions away. I take it all as canon, even books and comics and stuff that flatly conflicts, and find a way to squish it all into one big universe. I have a disease.

That said, I am open-minded about this new film. If it contradicts or violates what I already know, I'll adapt, not insist that the film is somehow Star Trek blasphemy.

PREACH!

(meaning I agree)

I try to never compare incarnations of movies to their previous generation.

But sometimes it happens, such as in Batman The Dark \Knight.

But mostly because it used three scenes from the Burton/Keaton movie.

Star Trek needs a reimagining of its universe more than in design imo.
And it would be great if we didn't exactly know what would happen to the federation. Will a Klingon Task Force decloak over Earth in the next movie/episode? Do we really want humanoids on every planet?

On the other hand, as said, it WILL have not-so-small ties to the established Star Trek, because it will (probably) open with a scene in the TNG era with a very familiar face from the TOS era.
I really wonder how this will all work out.

I wish it were really like that. But here's the reality (and from people who I know that like Star Trek)...

Me: Hey Tom (or Jeff, Jenn, Gabe, Ann, Heather... so on), did you hear that the guy who makes Lost is making a new Star Trek movie?!

Tom: No

Me: Yeah- it involves the original character played by (actors names) and takes place before the original 5 year mission!

Tom: That sounds good. I haven't heard anything about it.

Me: Here are some links for info on it!

Tom: Never heard of these sites- looks like sites only trekkies and sci-fi people would go to.

Me: Yeah- but there will be trailers and more hype as the date comes closer.

Tom: Sounds good- but it sounds like something I'd wait to see on DVD...

Me: You and everyone else I've told.
----------------------------------------------

Now for the conversation with people who know of Star Trek but never really watched it before.

Me: Hey (insert friends name), did you hear that the guy who makes Lost is making a new Star Trek movie?!

Friend: Oh yeah...

Me: You watch Lost?

Friend: Yeah.

Me: Would you go see Star Trek?

Friend: ahhhh- no.

Me: What if it were hyped up like Batman?

Friend: I don't think so...

Me: But it's not old- it's new- contemporary. It willl be compelling! Full of action and drama! The actors are great!

Friend: But it's Star Trek. It's, well, nerdy!

Me: So is Batman if you think about it.

Friend: It's not the same. It's Star Trek...

<sigh>

^
^^ But it will depend on -- and hopefully benefit from -- its ad campaign and the way it will be hyped in the weeks leading up to its opening.

Spiderman was only known as a geeky comic book and a couple of bad cartoons prior to the Tobey Maguire movie, but it became a must-see film back in 2002.
