DC Gary Seven comics collected

IDW's third Star Trek Archives collection will feature Gary Seven tales by Howard Weinstein and Michael Jan Friedman. The Amazon listing has a Jan 29, 2009 publication date: Star Trek Archives, Vol. 3: The Gary Seven Collection

I think this includes DC Comics second series issues Star Trek #49 and #50 (1993), and Star Trek Annual #6, ST:TNG Annual #6 (1995-1996).

So... another IDW collection where half the content has already been reprinted in a Titan Books collection? Woo hoo.

That second Annual was pretty hard to find IIRC, back when I was collecting 'em all. Annual #6, the Telepathy War conclusion and one or two Gold Key issues kept me haunting eBay for months.

Kids these days won't know how good they have it.

and more awareness of Gary Seven that better I say. I'm still hoping for an Assignment:Earth in the 21st Cenutry tv series staring Rain Robinson !

Yeah... never knowing the thrill of the hunt.

I've lost both local second book shops just recently. One put their stock "into storage" while they decide where to move to, and the other shop is bolted tight following the death of the owner.

I didn't realise it was IDW behind these latest "Best of..." collections. Sounds like IDW is making sure they have a great variety of ST graphic novel shelf stock by the time ST XI hits.

So has Titan's run of DC reprint collections finished?

Is that long-delayed "Key Collection" (with Shras on the cover) of Gold Key issues ever going to turn up?

There's something really depressing about someone talking about how kids today don't know how good they have it when talking about the good old days on eBay, which didn't exist when I was a kid...........

I did the same double-take. :)

Here in Sydney at the moment, I'm dealing with 400 elementary-level school students every day who have no idea that the Olympic Games were held in Sydney only eight years ago.

Worse than that, we had Grandparents' day recently - and it seemed like every grandparent was younger than me. For a while, the teachers were wondering where all the grey-haired people were, then we realised that we were the grey-headed people.

Yep. I just wish IDW would ficus on reprinting stuff other companies haven't done recently. With the DVDs coming out, that makes these new collections even less essential.

It appeared in the latest Diamond catalogue.

I can see the reasoning behind the first three IDW omnibus volumes, though.

  • Peter David, a big-name comics writer.
  • The Borg, a fan-favorite villain (and subject of a number of recent Trek novels).
  • Gary Seven, the star of a recent mini-series by John Byrne (a comics god).

There are solid marketing hooks on all three. I'm sure IDW used the same reasoning in putting together the upcoming Grant Morrison's Doctor Who miniseries.

I suppose the next possibility would be a "Myriad Universes"-themed omnibus. Collect the Howard Weinstein time travel story where the Federation and Klingons were allied. Both of Malibu's DS9 annuals.

A "Mirror Universe" omnibus would be possible, too. The Mirror Universe Saga, the Marvel special, the Malibu story with Mirror Tuvok.

A crossover volume -- Modala Imperative, the TNG/DS9 crossover, the Star Trek Unlimited issue with Q and Trelane, the Scotty in the 24th century short story, and there's certainly something that I'm forgetting.

A Q volume -- "The Gift" (the story co-written by John DeLancie, where Picard's younger brother Claude becomes a xenophobic dictator in an alternate timeline), the stories where Q turns the crew into Klingons and later Soong-type androids, the "All Good Things..." adaptation, even the aforementioned Q/Trelane story.

I'd even suggest "The Telepathy War" -- start it with the Starfleet Academy issues set on Talos IV, then continue into the crossover. (Skipping the superfluous Voyager issue, though.)

Another good one was the return of Harry Mudd written by Howie Weinstein, et al. That was a fun 2 or 3 issue set.

My favorite was The Final Voyage (think that was the name) which featured the last mission of the Enterprise's original five-year journey. Bringing the Talosians and Koloth into it, as well as Will Decker, it was a great adventure to cap it off on.

Agreed. I always considered that one to be a real treat. I wish more could have turned out so engaging.
