Clifton Collins interview - minor spoilers

I wonder what time period the Romulans that travel back in time are from, Pre nemesis i assume, seeing a Picard and crew almost single handily saved the Romulan Empire from a mad man, i think that alone would make relations with the Romulan Empire a lot more freindly.
But these are Romulan "pirates." It's not like pirates of the 18th century subscribed to the official political stance of the British Empire. Nero and his band's point of view likely has nothing to do with the official position of the Romulan Empire no matter what time period they come from. It's analagous to Kruge, Klaa, and Chang from the movies. They were all considered renegades of the Klingon empire and were either officially censured or at least not explicitly endorsed (even in the testimony of the Klingon from Star Trek IV and VI).

So that begs the question why would they go back in time to kill Kirk, oh god don't say we have another angry Romulan renegade on the loose.

Agreed. If anything, if there is any relation to TNG era at all, IMO, it will be because Spock has been successful in his long mission on Romulus and a final, lasting peace is about to begin, so Nero and his group decide to alter time in order to prevent this and cast the future in favor of the Empire.
