Continuum DVD sales start strong

Good news...

Stargate Continuum narrowly missed the top spot on the U.S. DVD sales charts last week, launching at number two. But it did take first place in Blu-ray sales for the week of July 28.

The new SG-1 direct-to-DVD movie was beat only by the movie Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay -- by fewer than 200 units, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert

Data on just how many units this accounts for is not yet available. But the opening is clearly very strong, and bodes well for future direct-to-DVD projects for the Stargate franchise. Stay tuned to GateWorld for the latest!

Well, for all its flaws, it was fun, and I bought it. Hopefully they make that last movie about Jack and then call it a day on SG-1.

I bought it, with a 40% off coupon from Borders, to encourage future Stargate projects. I didn't buy Ark of Truth because I didn't like the Ori storyline.

Voting with my pocketbook.

Tremendous news! Hopefully get them to continue making quality movies like this one. I hope they keep them with the look and feel of the shows instead of going epic. Perhaps Trek could learn from this as well.

Keep 'em coming guys.

Wow, "Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay" beat a Stargate dvd movie...

How is this good news? There was clearly F all being released on dvd that weekend.

^Stargate is more of a niche interest than comedy, even if it is stupid comedy. Stargate only being down 200 units to something that is naturally going to attract more people isn't a bad number.

Do you have any idea how the mind of John Q. Public works?

Emphasis mine as I have no idea what that actually means.

In any event, it came out Number 2...I would think thats pretty good considering it's a direct-to-dvd movie as opposed to a DVD release of a theatrical film (which generally have wider audience awareness).

Harold and Kumar 1 had a large following on DVD so no surprise number 2 did so well. Not too mention even the critics loved number 1 (sequel was ok) Stargate will however sell better in upcoming weeks compared to such a movie.

I love how you always try and find a way to bash Stargate :p

Well, I picked up my copy at Wal-Mart for $15.99, with a Fry's Electronics advert price match.

Go me.

I'll probably pick up any other direct-to-DVD release they make for SG-1.

I'm not trying to bash Stargate, my point was the fact that a Stargate DVD movie didn't even manage to beat something called "Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay" whatever the hell that is... is hardly something to shout about.

Hardly something to shout about creatively perhaps (although I've seen the first film widely praised for its deconstruction of race in Hollywood films), but certainly a financially lucrative product. It's no surprise it outsold Continuum. And I say that as someone who has grown very tired with Stargate lately (but hasn't given up completely yet).

Have you actually seen the movies? They're not bad. (Though the sequel faltered a bit.)

I'm pretty confident in saying that Harold and Kumar has a larger public image, especially among youths, than Stargate.

Arrogance.

Just because you don't know what something is, doesn't diminish the public image of something. Most people, in fact, know what Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay was.

That's a very pretty arrogant view on your part.
