Why did they get a black guy to play Scotty?

They already changed Uhura from an average looking black chick (Nichelle Michols) to a hot black chick (the new chick.)
Nichelle Nichols is average looking? What? NN is an amazingly beautiful woman!

Technically, the original poster was referring to Nichelle Michols, not Nichelle Nichols, so there is no cause for alarm.

Apparently, Nichelle Michols starred in 'Star Trek V: The Final Frontier':

Perhaps that is why everyone hates that movie. If they had just stuck with Nichols, the movie would have been fanastic.

But Michols was willing to do nudity, and Nichols was not.

I'm all for equalality. But this is fucking ridiculous. If they wanted a new black character in the film they could have invented a new one out of their imaginations instead of turning Scotty black. They already changed Uhura from an average looking black chick (Nichelle Michols) to a hot black chick (the new chick.) That's enough. But to cast some Tuvok look alike at Scotty is beyond the pale (no pun intended.) I dont think I'll be seeing this movie. Although it's still a year away anyway so maybe I'll have changed my mind by then or they will have recast.

Really?

What planet are you from? Don't you pay attention?

The real losers in this incident were the poor people who were deprived of my presence for the 24 hours that I was banned. That blood is on your hands. I'm just glad to see that pretty much everyone survived that particular horror... somehow.

Carry on...

Just.

So, what are your views on the textile industry, with particular reference to delta woven fabric, the likelihood and practicality thereof - any financial implications and the possibilities of silk screen printing of the new uniforms.

I was offended by the entire tone of the above.

Not for any real reason. I just was.

I hope this won't happen again, because if it does I'll be offended again.

You know how serious that can be.

I may post about it.

In words.

You'll pay...

There's going to be a global announcement in every forum shortly on the hotlinking/image leaching issue.
I realize this is a problem, but do we really need to get the United Nations and the whole Internet invovled with this?

To promote sombreros, maybe, but not to stop hotlinking. This just seems like an over-reach.

Hey, once I, Samuel T. Cogley, have been snagged in the questionably-legal dragnet of the TrekBBS, it has become an international incident. It's already going to be all over the news tonight, so we might as well get the worlds' greatest minds involved as quickly as possible.
Calling Tom Cruise!

And we thought he was going to be left out of the new movie.

P'shaw!

I would prefer that we not start taking potshots at each other. I've read through this entire thread and have not seen any evidence of trolling. With four mods in this forum one of us would have said something if there was any of that going on. If you think this thread sucks I would encourage you not to look at it or post in it any longer, because accusing other people of trolling can sometimes get yourself in trouble for that very thing. If you feel there is a problem post that needs to be addressed use this

button and the mods will take a closer look. If you feel anybody's avatar is inappropriate use this
report.gif
button once again and the admins and mods will take a look. Thanks.

My dear Mod -

I don't even know how to respond to that. I can get in trouble for calling a duck a duck then it would seem. A Blackface avatar IS trolling. You can clearly see where I have been trolled by it in this thread. It's trolling the entire board right now, and I don't think this thread will be the end of it unless it is changed. I did ask a Mod of this forum to look into it a couple days ago.
But I will keep my phaser for TNZ only, I nearly forgot this was Federation space. Got to stay PC, after all.

Oh my God. Cogley I just saw your avatar and nearly lost perfectly good soda.

Maybe CaptainStoner is right.

I'm going to change it right now.

Just give me a minute...

Better?

(And I love that someone named Captain "Stoner" is preaching morality to me.)

Stoner is a real surname. There's an elementary school near my house named Stoner. A street as well. ^^^

Silly man. :D

You haven't been trolled by anything. You clearly don't understand what trolling is. There was no intent to anger or bait you or anybody else. You're annoyed by something and don't like it. That's not sufficient reason to start banning avs and handing out warnings. There are threads on this board I find annoying too. I stay out of those threads. I suggest you do the same.

If you are not satisfied with this course of action feel free to start a thread in QSF debating the appropriateness of the av. That's where any further discussion on this matter needs to go since it's a board wide issue.

The reason behind the blackface makeup was because it was considered very bad for black performers to take the roles away from white actors. So somehow they came up with blackface, which also doesn't really make much sense either when one thinks about it.

However, this concerns me.

The black man always gets killed first.

I don't understand what your particularly narrow definition is. I do look forward to destroying you in further debate in another thread. :klingon:

As for this one, I just have one question:

Why is Scotty wearing a sombrero? Is that even canon?

:( RIP Scotty.

All I really knew about blackface is that it is offensive to blacks. I also remember an episode where Nell Carter is offended when Joey Lawrence gets his little brother, Matthew Lawrence, to dress in blackface to get back at Nell. It was a touching episode.
Personally, I find it offensive only because it is offensive to a specific race of people, including my own godson.
DEAR SAM, please get tired of the joke soon. Thank you.

I suppose it would be best not to chime in at all, but --

This thread started as a relatively humorous rant that Scotty was black based on how he looked in the poster (at least I'm assuming that).
Mr. Cogley did not intend offense by his avatar. Most probably think it's just Sam being Sam. But, I'd have to think he knows that the minstrel blackface is probably not a good source of humor. The image can offend. It simply carries too much baggage to be a source of humor, especially for something as frivolous as this thread, or the entire Trek BBS, for that matter.

The minstrel shows began in the 1830s, long before Jolson, by whites in blackface. They started many of the popular sterotypes of blacks that even continue today. And when blacks were finally allowed in minstrel shows, they had to play to the sterotype, and it was advertised to the public as a view of black life.

The avatar may not be trolling, but it does trivialize what the blackface has come to stand for.

Just my two cents from the peanut gallery. I'm done.

However, the idea of Mr. T as Scotty is funny:
Kirk: Scotty, we need more power.
Scott: I pitty the fool who thinks there's more power in these engines.

Cogley I suggest you stay away from places like Compton for awhile...at least until you get a new avatar. You don't want to be like Bruce Willis at the start of Die Hard With a Vengeance.
