What Will TDK's Final (Domestic) Box Office Total Be?

Very true. Technically Batman Begins is a sequel, but I see it separately from the previous films. In regards to Abram's film, I would argue that it is its own film, especially considering the talk of there being sequels (with the same cast) if it's successful.

I'm not sure how Batman Begins qualifies as a sequel. Yes, there were previous movies with the same character, but those were clearly part of a different continuity. Does Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes count as a sequel?

I'm not too sure if I'd call BB a sequel either. Although, I suppose it depends on your definition of sequel! Maybe it's a prequel more than anything?:lol:

By the way - 12 other people voted for $600 million in the poll, it's not just me!

To be fair, I did say "technically" and that I didn't personally think it should be called a sequel. I only said that because it isn't the first Batman film just like Abrams film isn't the first Star Trek film.

Reboots within an existing film series are in a sort of No Man's Land between a sequel and an original. In story terms they may be unconnected to the previous films, and therefore not a sequel, but as a commercial and practical undertaking they're nonetheless "the next film in the series". So Batman Begins may not have been a sequel, but it was still Batman V to the public (and Batman VI to those who count the 1966 movie).

IMHO...

Sequel - Continuation of existing story-line with mostly the same actors/characters.
Prequel - Pre-Original Film story with original characters, mostly different actors.
In-Between-Quel - Film that takes place between an original film and a sequel; or between sequels.
Reboot - Complete relaunch, abandoning any other films.

Batman Begins was a reboot.

The Dark Knight cemented that in stone, because the Joker and Two-Face appeared, thus conflicting 100% with two prior films, and making them impossible to co-exist in the same space-time-continuity...

Now as for the new Trek film...

That's the gray zone. Technically, it's a prequel. It has Nimoy, so it co-exists with Trek. But so much else is being changed, apparently. Yet it's following continuity. So it's a hybrid reboot-prequel. Perhaps we'll call it a Preboot. :p

Oh, and if anyone really wants their vote to become right, go see TDK again a lot. LOL. I'm going again later today. :)

TDK and Pineapple Express are pretty much tied in the Friday estimates. It's going to be close for #1 for the weekend. TDK should have the edge as opening weekends usually have lower multipliers than subsequent weekends (although PE had some burn-off by opening on Wednesday, which should lead to a higher weekend multiplier than if it had opened on Friday).

$7.9 to $7.6 for Friday. Yeah, it's gonna be close! Oh how I hope TDK can hold out. It doesn't deserve to loose number one to a stoner movie!

Based on its previous weekends, I'm guessing The Dark Knight will make about $23 or $24 million this weekend. Just shy of the Fourth Weekend record.

Which would make my $440m speculation by Sunday night right about spot on.

According to Deadline Hollywood the very early estimates (obviously subject to change) are that TDK has held #1 for the fourth straight weekend with $26 million, while Pineapple Express is at #2 with $22 million. That would make TDK the third film this decade to stay at #1 for four consecutive weekends (The Fellowship of the Ring and The Return of the King being the other two) and the first summer film of this decade to do so.

The last May, June, or July release to do that was Saving Private Ryan, right?

Wow, that's better than I expected. That would be a mere $2 million shy of Titanic's Fourth Weekend record.

That puts The Dark Knight JUST past Shrek 2 on the all time domestic unadjusted list at third place. All in 24 days!

"It's All... Part of the Plan."

I am so thrilled by this. "The Dark Knight" did not deserve to fall to second behind any film entitled "Pineapple Express" - let alone a film of limited intelligence. I'm sorry, but "The Dark Knight" is too incredible of a film, too great of a film, to befall such fate.

Four Weeks at Number One. Awesome!

Just amazing, and absolutely fantastic!

TDK deserves it. Titanic, hopefully, is going down. :D
