Favourite instrumental rock piece?

I am not Spock

Commodore
Commodore
Some favourites I'd like to submit are:

Bron Yr Aur which appears on Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti album
Laguna Sunrise on Black Sabbath Volume 4
Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield
Losfer Words on Iron Maiden's Powerslave
Just about every Metallica instrumental, especially Orion
La Villa Strangiato by Rush
Surfing with the Alien by Joe Satriani

Any others you'd like to mention?

Orion, definitely.

The Call of Ktulu was great as well. :techman:

Are either available on Rock Band or Guitar Hero? That would be great!

Eric Johnson's "Cliffs of Dover" deserves a placement here, I'd say.

Orion, definitely.

The Call of Ktulu was great as well. :techman:

Yay!

For the Love of God, Steve Vai.

Little Wing, the Stevie Ray Vaughn version.

Atom Heart Mother, by Pink Floyd.

One of these Days, by Pink Floyd.

The Great Gig in the Sky, by Pink Floyd.

Any Color You Like, by Pink Floyd.

Marooned, by Pink Floyd.

Barry White's Love Theme ;)

The Pogues' "Wild Cats of Kilkenny" and "A Pistol for Paddy Garcia," both off their album Rum Sodomy and the Lash.

Even though it segues into a vocal piece, I love Billy Joel's intro to "Angry Young Man."

All the Metallica ones
Megadeth-Into the Lungs of Hell
All the Iron Maiden ones
And I can't forget about "Eruption."

Misirlou by Dick Dale & The Del Tones
Good choice.

Mine would be Phish's You Enjoy Myself, even though it does have a few meaningless lyrics towards the end of it.

For a pure instrumental, the Allman Bros. Band, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.

Seconded: Tubular Bells (my favorite song, period) and Cliffs of Dover.

Classical Gas - Mason Williams
Autobahn - Kraftwerk (I don't think what few words it has in it disqualify it from being, overall, instrumental - they're used more as vocal instruments than actual lyrics)
Boureé - Jethro Tull
The Fall of the House of Usher; A Dream Within a Dream; I, Robot - Alan Parsons Project

The Great Gig In the Sky would top my list with In the Memory of Elizabeth Reed and Classical Gas chasing Misirilou for second. Tubular Bells is great and Bron Yr Aur and Laguna Sunrise are notable mentions. (Sunrise is by Sabbath for the heret-I mean , uninformed, out there.

ed.-Crap. I Forgot The Fish by Yes!

I second Laguna Sunrise. Fluff is really good as well. Most of Sabbath's instrumentals are 'meh' though.

I can't even think of any other instrumentals it's like my mind has frozen. I'll mention that In Flames have a lot of good ones (Dialogue With The Stars, Pallar Anders Visa, Man Made God, Whoracle and Wayfaerer spring to mind) and Soulfly's self-titled pieces III and V are beautiful rock/tribal instrumentals and leave it at that for now.
