"What? We don't need stupid gadgets to make a good spy film? Who knew?"

The Bond people knew. They did it in 1989 with License to Kill, the public just wasn't ready for it at the time (and Timothy Dalton never really caught on in the US, unfortunately). The Bourne films influenced Casino Royale to a certain extent, but it seemed to me they just decided the time was right to go back to the direction they tried 15 years earlier.

ETA: In fact, gadget free Bond comes 'round in cycles. Dr. No, From Russia With Love, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and For Your Eyes Only all have few, if any, gadgets.

License To Kill had plenty of gadgets in it they even put Q in the field to arm Bond.

Let me put it this way: What guy has ever fantasized about being Jason Bourne?

Ask the ladies which one they'd prefer. Might be an eye opener. ;)

When I meant more human, I meant that he's not the sort of cliche emotionless hero of the Connery/Roger Moore films (and even the Brosnan ones). Bourne is someone who you can feel for, you feel empathetic towards him, you understand him.

That's exactly it. Bond is nothing more than a cardboard cutout. Okay if you like that sort of thing.

From Russia With Love has Bond's first 'real' gadget - the briefcase.

You are right, though, most Bond films prominently feature expensive cars that are featured due to payments from their manufacturers. On Her Majesty's Secret Service, for instance, features a Mercedes-Benz 600, driven by Blofeld in the final scene where Tracy is murdered. (Yes, the same car of choice for evil dictators Jeremy Clarkson was driving in Top Gear the other week!)

Bond all the way. I only saw the first Bourne entry, and it put me to sleep. In the theater, one of only two movies to ever do that. And that was because Bourne was bland beyond belief. I'll take Bond any day. :D

Now, Bond vs. Bauer? That would be a tough choice. ;)

I've only read the Ludlum books and that was maybe 20 years ago. Has he turned into an average action hero?
Yes, I liked the Ludlum books, but there is much more action in Eric Van Lustbader's novels on Bourne.

I voted for Bond. Been a fan since Connery played the character. And I read Fleming's books 30 years ago.
I read the books too, but I have always liked the movie better. In the books Bond seems abit more timid.

Interesting for me choice in Lustbader as I read his book "The Ninja" around the same time I read "Bourne Identity". I read Trevanian's "Shibumi" at that time too. Of the three I liked "Shibumi" the most.

It had plenty of gadgets Bond never used, so I hardly think that counts. The only things Q supplied Bond in that film that saw use were the plastic explosives hidden in a toothpaste tube (barely counts as a gadget) and the gun hidden in the camera. That one was bulky and very practical as far as equipment goes. There was a conscious effort in that film to push Bond as realistic as possible and tone down the gadgets - just like in Casino Royale.

I suspect to build a framework to make Bourne durable enough to last, say, 22 movies, and still travel around to exotic locales and do the super spy thing we have come to expect, he would end up looking a lot more like Bond.

I haven't seen the Bourne films, but I have read the Bourne Identity (about 25 years ago) but nothing tops Daniel Craig's Bond for me at the moment.

Jason Bourne. Only really like the Connery and Brosan versions of Bond, even then hes seems to posh and formal for me. Bournes more like the average joe on the street.

Is this a question? Really? Someone had to ask this? :p ;)

Bourne all the way. Aside from being more realistic, I thought he had a very interesting story, and the man kills people with newspapers. That takes some skill.

Bond hands down, sorry but Matt Damon sends me to sleep. The first Bourne film was actually very good, shame the 2nd and 3rd became shaky camera mirror images of one another and jettisened Franke Portne.

I find it amusing that Casino Royle was a reaction to Bourne, especially when the 3rd Bourne film lifted the Tangiers rooftop chase from The Living Daylights. And all that left field stuff re Julia Stiles character in the third one was a bit WTF as well. Did like the Railway station bit mind you, even if it was the sort of thing Spooks (MI5) have been doing for ages.
