The movie doesn't come out till tomorrow; how has everyone seen it already? I saw it early because I work in a video store. Anyway, I was extremely disappointed. I thought ARK OF TRUTH was an excellent wrap up to the Ori story with lots of action and it looked like it had a decent budget. This one on the other hand was incredibly slow, looked cheap as hell (except for the Arctic shooting which was completely unnecessary), and was one huge rehash of previous episodes. FULL SPOILERS HERE: I don't understand how this movie has a $7 mil budget. Absolutely nothing happens for the first 53 minutes of the movie. The entire Arctic sequence, which I'm sure took the bulk of the money, was completely superfluous to the plot. The team just happens to jump into the Arctic and wanders around for 20 minutes. Wow. Was that really necessary? The entire first half plus of the movie is just a little character drama with no plot to speak of. The second half is better, but it's a huge rehash. It's literally Lost City plus There But For the Grace of God. Only not as well done as either of those. Even having Ba'al as the all knowing villain only lasts about five minutes. There's a nice little sequence where they're in fighter jets fighting Gou'ald Death Gliders, but that's about the only 'neato' sequence in the whole movie. Again I wonder where the money went. Oh yes, and we finally get Jack back... for about 10 minutes of the entire run time. Sigh.
^It leaked weeks ago, and a lot of websites send out international orders as soon as they get stock, because they can take up to 21 days to arrive (although it's usually more like 3 or 4 in my experience.)
A 3. It's a typical Stargate storyline rehashed once again with the same things happening once again, but I had such low hopes and after the last awful movie (which would get a 1) at least this one was watchable. It was stupid fun.
I just got back from buying it. Target has 3 left after I got mine. I'll watch it tonight with the kids. I hope those that used illegal means to watch it will pony up and buy it now that it's out.
I had mine ordered almost as soon as it was up for pre-order. Generally the only time I download something is either try before I buy, or something I know I will be buying anyway, but I'm excited to see it.
Looking at the reviews I'll think I'll hold up until it comes on demand. I have to say that I like Bob the Skutter's idea of a time travel story, which was hit upon slightly in Children of Time- one of DS9's best episodes, and think he should write it and submit it to MGM.
Rather good in lots of ways. The weird way that Vala vanishes first, while Mitchell, Carter and Daniel don't vanish till it's too late (in transit in the wormhole) just makes no sense. But if it didn't happen that way they would have had duplicate characters. Also points off for everyone speaking English. Yeah, it speeds up the interaction. It's still ridiculous. I haven't read most of the thread but I can't see any significant borrowing from Lost City or There But for the Grace of God at all. If anything, the movie reprises elements 2010 and 1969 and The Road Not Taken. Rather effectively, I thought. Wonder if it was Michael Shank's idea to have one legged Daniel nearly as spry as one legged Christian Bale in 3:10 to Yuma?
The good - Yu returns. So does Steve Bacic as Callamus or whatever the hell his name is. And Nirrti. Though, the reports of her actually having a role here were quite ... exaggerated. She had what, one line? And a few seconds on screen? The bad - Everything else about this bloated excuse for a "movie". How nice of them to aid Al Gore's recycling efforts, with the scripts of There But For the Grace of God, Mobius, and others being recycled without even adding in new content. Very smart of them. Putting in something new would require the writers to come up with something new, and we obviously can't have that.
Loved it. Great seeing SG-1 back in action again, even if they were split up for the better part of the film. Stargate was always a popcorn entertainment, and that was exactly what this was: enjoyable. It was also great seeing all the familiar faces again. Question: The ship in 1939 brings the Stargate safely to the U.S., but now with a massive hole in its side, caused by the Stargate. They now know the Stargate works--so wouldn't the War Department of the 1940s make a special effort to get it working again? Wouldn't this lead to a Stargate program being developed in the 1940s, and yet another changed timeline? Can't help but wonder how this was avoided. Sean
Shhhhhh..... It's time travel. I would like them to make a movie when I'm done watching I had fun and it was meaningful. The first sucked and the second means nothing overall.
They did. And the results of which left Ernest Littlefield lost after he stepped in the gate in 1945, which closed the program down until Catherine Langfordwas able to get it going again in the 90s. ("Torment of Tantalus"; "1969")
I actually really liked it. Yeah, it might have been another alternate timeline story, but I love those and I thought this one was really well done. The only complaint I have is also part of the reason I liked it, the fact that it was just another alternate timeline story. As for the characters and script, I thought they were both pretty much on par with what I expect from Stargate, there really weren't any bad line or performances or anything IMO. I'm still fairly new to the SG universe, but I have enough familiarity with it that I was able to recognize pretty much all of the references and returning characters. I'm especially happy to see that they brought back Gen. Hammond one last time.
I'm disappointed. Jeez, if you're going to do an alternate timeline for a movie, do something with some lasting ramifications for the regular timeline. Something like, having the main characters remember things after the reset or something. Jeez, Reset Buttons are stupid enough when done in episodes, but a movie? That's low. That's just low, cheap, and greasy. And all the characters they brought back for pointless cameos? I understand they can't devote appreciable screen time to a lot of people, but cameos this pointless? Shouldn't even have bothered. They wasted Jack O'Neill, Generals Hammond and Landry don't have roles of any signicance. Apophis was not necessary at all. The System Lords were even more unnecessary. The so-called "Twist" regarding Mitchell's grandfather being the boat captain was easliy predicted, but that was mainly because I recognized Ben Browder despite the beard. And really how much of a fan-wank is it that Mitchell's grandfather commanded the boat that brought the Stargate to America? And what's up with the To'kra homeworld? I thought the To'kra lived in underground caves. Those are a lot of really tall buildings. How did the Goa'uld never find this planet and bombard those buildings. And furthermore, the To'kra are supposed to be a dying race. That's a lot of folks for a race said to be on the brink of extinction. The only thing I did like was Ba'al. He kicked ass, and his phone conversation with President Hayes was really cool. Although I would have liked some resolution regarding what will happen to his host. Overall, I'm bummed. I'm a pretty big Stargate fan. I loved SG-1 in its first eight seasons, and did enjoy nine and ten, though not as much. I did think Ark of Truth was amazing, though. Atlantis was awesome in its first two season. Three was a bit of a disappointment, and four was only marginally better than three. But hear me now: Stargate Continuum is truly the lowest point of the Stargate franchise.
Without any real threat from the System Lords the Tok'ra don't need to live underground anymore and they probably grew the city just as they grew their old bases with a crystal.
