The graphics look quite stunning. A shame it doesn't appear to be headed for PC.
we'll see . . .

This should be quite good-I know the programmers and have seen some of their other work. And so have many of you-if you saw the Perfect Storm these guys did all of the water cgi work and if you have played America's Army they also did all of the texturing and topology. Same thing for GRAW. Ironically, I know a spot in GRAW where the wall is a cgi reproduction of an old board in my best friend's back yard-I was holding the piece of wood when the digital photos that the programming was based on were taken.
I had the opportunity to speak to the leads on this project on July 4th and after many beers I got them talking-if they pull off all they told me this could be the mmorpg to beat-they had a lot of innovative ideas. I hope to beta test it in the next few weeks and see....

You have got too be joking, its already in the beta stage.......i had no idea perpetual had done so much work on it before they went belly up.

^^ they are already at a beta testing phase? that seems pretty quick.

i wish them luck.

Well...

Star Trek Online is the working title of an MMORPG, currently being developed by Cryptic Studios. It began development at Perpetual Entertainment and was announced on September 7, 2004.[2]

On January 14, 2008, Perpetual Entertainment announced that it is no longer developing Star Trek Online. The license for the game and all of its assets except for the code have been transferred to Cryptic Studios. [3][4].

On July 28, 2008, Cryptic Studios announced production of Star Trek Online with the launch of the Star Trek Online Website.

my buddy at Cryptic has already sent pieces of the game to his brother in law(a COMPLETE gaming nerd) to try out, so, yeah, they are closer to the beta than you might think.

^ Some MMO's on 360 are having a much lower fee or no fee due to the yearly subscripton...we will jsut have to see.

After seeing gameplay footage of both STARGATE WORLDS & HUXLEY and finding them both to be utter crap, my hope is left with ST:O. I have never played a MMO past the trail version and am looking for a decent one so hope it turns out to be good.

so is it the same game design and engine that Perpetual started doing? is Cryptic just putting on the "finishing touches"? did any of the deisgners from Perpetual move over to cryptic?

i imagine doing an mmo on the 360 could be problematic with patches. specifically with any quick patches. unless MS dumps patch certification

Best MMO out there is Everquest2. My absolute favorite MMO of alltime followed closely by the original Everquest. I've tried practically every major MMO out there and the Everquest franchise are the only ones I've ever enjoyed.

I wonder whether Cryptic will be supporting the PS3, Champions Online is 360 and PC only, though it's possible that's just because it might be a re-skin of the aborted Marvel Universe Online, which was developed for the 360 from the outset.

I'm cautious about Trek Online, partially because of it's failure at perpetual, but also because I doubt Cryptic started from scratch once they took over the project.

I'm glad those screenshots were accompanied by the Star Trek Online logo, else I'd have no idea they were depicting the Trek universe.

Sounds like they made some changes since the last time I paid even the slightest bit of attention to STO.

Used to be that different players would form ship crews. Now it looks like they put everyone in the captains chair. Which is good because I absolutely did not want to take "orders" from some twelve year old calling himself "captenkerk420lol".

The console thing is encouraging as well. Hopefully that means it'll be more action and less XP grinding. Console gamers seem to have less patience for that kind of thing, in my experience. Plus I doubt my PC will be able to handle it.

Still, I think I'll hold off until the expansion/DLC that makes Romulans playable characters. That'll give me time to hear reviews and determine if I'll get it at all.

That's another thing, this morning I was wondering why it looks nothing like Trek as we know it.

Well, it's been 6 years since we saw the 24th Century, and that was just one film. Before that, just a few other 2-hour films.

It's been NINE YEARS since the last Federation-based TV series went off the air (DS9, since Voyager only saw Earth briefly I don't count it here.)

Point being, that Starbase sure looks Federation-like to me. Yes, it's different, but it's been almost a decade since we had any contact with that time period. I'm sure things have changed. I'm assuming the other stuff is alien technology.

I agree that it would have been nice to see more Trek stuff in the preview shots, but I guess they want to just give a small taste for now.

I read somewhere that it's set in the 25th century now, anyway.

If true, it's a good idea. It'd certainly help with the inevitable "canon" whining. Most changes could be chalked up to the passage of time.

Personally, I think that's the reason TOS games have always been, on average, much better than the TNG era games. There was less of the TOS era to be constricted by.

Most of what I have read don't fit well with the Star Trek Universe either.

Every player is Captain of a starship?? Wow the Federation must really be growing at an exponential rate to require so many Captains and starships.

Customizing starships with new systems?? That sounds almost like Laforge throwing out that old Mark IV warp engine on the Enterprise for a new Mark V.

Discovering resources for the Federation?? Great, we're playing an RTS with resource gathering.

Play as Starfleet or Klingon?? I hope it won't turn into CoH vs CoV PvP.

I'm sorry but most of the above sound like Cryptic Studios slapping on MMO mechanics without much care about whether it fits within the Star Trek universe. I am really afraid that most away missions will end up with players in Starfleet uniforms shooting at aliens with phaser rifles and photonic grenades. What ever happened to the things that Perpetual planned to implement? Things like moving up the ranks based on experience, having a starship run and maintained by multiple players in different departments.
