Background Noise

TOS often used sound f/x to good effect--not a wholly novel idea in itself but well appreciated even if by today's standards it came seem intrusive.

More contemporary productions still use background sound f/x, but more subtly. Hell, sometimes they're so subtle I question whether there's actually anything to be heard or not.

Here, at 4:30. It's just a YouTube clip though, not the original sound file which would be illegal to post.

If it's illegal to post old sound effects, where does that leave the fanfilms that rely on them? Not to mention the non-Trek Hollywood productions that have cribbed TOS sound effects over the years?

Well, for one thing, they are not selling their productions. Hearing it in the background of a fan film is not exactly the same as downloading the whole track. If you want to own it, you'll have to buy it, I guess. You know, somebody had to make that music. ;)

And what exactly does it matter that this musical piece is old?

I think they would have to pay for the use of said music.

But I'm a designer, not a lawyer. ;)

Does no one else have a copy of this CD?

I do. I'm just not sure where to post the sound clip. I'd be glad to email it to somebody if they would host it.

I used to own this exact CD but a good friend bought if off me for a little more than I originally paid at retail so he could use it in his church's traveling roadshow as "alien space background noise" for one of the teenage plays.

I've known people to use this site to host audio clips.
I've registered. Give me a few minutes and I'll post excerpts of two alien soundscapess off of this CD. I agree with those that posting the whole clips would be a violation of board rules regarding copyrighted material, but I'll take the dodge that amazon.com and others use. I'll edit them down to 30 seconds each and post those segments. I think that falls under fair use. You'll get the full effect from the excerpt.

If you want the CD, it's here.

OK. I'm ready. Since the site M'Sharak recommended loads them as QuickTime files, I don't see an easy way to download them. Therefore, I'm putting up the whole effect, not just the edit. T'Bonz or Mallory, if you have a problem with this, just PM me and I'll take them down to the 30 second, edited versions.

The first one is Track #7 on the CD, Star Trek Original T.V. Sound Effects. It's the one we've mostly been talking about, with the wind and transporter effect noises.

Alien Planet Surface

This next one, Track #37, is the one cooleddie74 mentioned, with the chimes and a murkier sound.

Alien Planet Atmosphere #2

Lastly, I have posted what this CD is known for, Track #1, a 5:58 mash-up of various sound effects that's a stunner. It's an audio trip through the Enterprise's bridge. A 45 second version of this greets me every time my computer reboots.

Enterprise Bridge Sequence

All copyrights remain with Paramount. Upload at Putfile

If any of you want these, just drop me a PM and an email addy, and I'll send them to you. They are about 17 MB total.

Fan films are technically illegal anyway; they're copyright infringement. Using the sound FX without permission falls into the same category as using the characters, concepts, music, set designs, etc. without permission. But Paramount ignores them so long as their makers don't attempt to profit from them.

When professional productions reuse sound FX, they do so through proper channels, licensing their use if they aren't part of a public-domain SFX library. In fact, generally if you look in the credits, you'll see a listing for a particular company that does the sound FX for a show (for instance, Glen Glenn Sound in the case of TOS, I believe); I'm not sure, but I assume that each company has its own proprietary library of sound FX that it uses in all the productions it works on. But a lot of sound FX are widely used throughout the industry (such as the Wilhelm scream whose reuse has become a running gag among sound editors in recent decades).

There were also a couple of TOS planets with ambient background noise that sounded like windchimes and eerie moaning.

This is a very interesting line of discussion.

I can't nail down exactly where I heard these "ambient alien planet background noise" effects that do not sound like a transporter materialization effect, but I think these are the prime candidates:

"Metamorphosis"

"The Apple"

"Mirror, Mirror" (teaser)

"The Gamesters of Triskelion" (not sure on this one)

"Obsession" (definitely sure of Tycho IV)

"By Any Other Name"

"Wink of an Eye" (accelerated world effect)

"The Savage Curtain" (not sure on this one)

As you can see, it seems that the most imaginative alien planet effects were predominately TOS Year 2 eps.

I love the audio effects from the series. The music, the sound effects, everything came together and it absorbs me into the episode. That aside, does anyone else think it's absolutely awesome that in the Cage clip, Spock uses that viewer like an iPod touch and simply waves his arm in a gesture to get it to change? I love that! :D

When it comes to the starship bridge ambient sound effects, the best-sounding (read: most convincing) are definitely in this order:

1: TOS Bridge of the Enterprise - the clear winner; the audio of intercom and radio chatter giving reports always struck me as giving the series a very catchy you-are-there feel that reminded me of NASA flight footage or maybe a police/fire scanner.

2: "The Wrath of Khan" starship bridge effects - very close to TOS, better than any other non-TOS Trek. They even included some intercom chatter.

3: TNG 1701-D Bridge + battle bridge. Nowhere near as effective as TOS. They did try to make it sound a little like a 1980's university computer lab. No chatter, though. Better than any of the subsequent series/movies, which sounded so sterile.

You are speaking of his initial report on the bridge about the Talos Star Group.

Yes, I always found that interesting. I always wondered what that was about; maybe there was an electric eye thingy going on or maybe someone else controlled the slideshow for him.

The idea was that it was a gestural control, the "electric eye thingy" you refer to. Even back in 1964 that concept was around in SF. Now we're close to having it in reality.

It reminds of Tom Cruise's virtual computer interface in Minority Report (for example).

It also reminds somewhat of the theremin, which had been around for decades at the time Star Trek was produced, and which used gestural pitch control to make spooky sci-fi movie sounds, or perhaps even "Good Vibrations".
