Blizzard Announce Diablo 3

I all of a sudden have the urge to play through the first 2 again.

After weeks of speculation, Blizzard has officially announced Diablo III at its World Wide Invitational event in Paris.

Said to feature more quests than ever, the anticipated sequel will stick to its roots by being "first and foremost a cooperative game."

Diablo III will feature old standards such as the quotable Deckard Cain, as well as a new version of Tristram and a fresh class dubbed the Witch Doctor. The jungle-born warrior will use ancient tribal magic to cast disease and mind control spells, in addition to utilizing pets such as locust swarms and mongrels.

The game will also include several control improvements, including full zoom capability and a hotbar to easily access skills. Players will be able to quickswap between skills using the mouse wheel or tab key. Armor will now be class-specific, designed to provide each character a unique look. Classes themselves are more diverse, as it was noted that there will be female versions of both the Barbarian and Witch Doctor.
In a demo of the Barbarian class, the company noted that less of an emphasis will be placed on potions for health. Instead, red orb-like items will drop that immediately recover health once the player picks them up.
Environmental destruction was also shown off, with a character at one point busting through a solid wall. The environment can also be used to kill enemies, as in the case of objects that fell from a wall, killing a group of monsters.
Enemies were shown to be larger in scale than in past games, with giant evil trees and a massive demon called a Siegebreaker.
Blizzard has released a set of official features and a story description, which can now be conveniently viewed below the fold:

Simply knowing that Blizzard is releasing a new game would be enough to just order it without having seen any footage or reviews.

They are one of the very few companys who consistently produce well rounded and fun games.

...and release dates be damned! ;)

The colorful palette kind of lends a more wow-ish feel to the universe that is rather disappointing. Looking at the screenshots and tinkering with them in photoshop really showed me how little effort it would take to change the feel of the game back to the Diablo we know and love graphically.

Essentially take down the saturation on everything that isn't a magical glow by about 15-20%, stronger contrast of shadows and highlights, sharper highlights, and a little bit of 'film grain'. Would need to change some of the environmental lighting too of course since currently most of them are on the cooler side of the spectrum (a greenish blue seems to be used heavily in the dungeons) and add to the 'WoW' feel.

Meh, never liked Diablo (one or two). But since I'm getting my SC II I'll settle for being happy for the folks who are looking forward to this :D

Yup. Never could get into the ARPG business.
It feels like Blizzard is a company good at iteration rather than innovation now... which is fine, I guess.
I kind of hope SC: Ghost comes out eventually, just to see if they can do anything different.

That's been the case for a long long time.

Blizzard doesn't really come up with anything fundamentally new... rather, they spend their effort refining existing genres. And they're great at it!

The amusing thing is that most of WoW's refinements to the Everquest formula were in the direction of enabling and rewarding casual play, yet the WoW community today is perceived to exist largely of addicts who spend half their lives in the game.

some good advice from Rob Pardo regarding sequels, "I'm going to go ahead and use Sid Meier's rule because we use something similar…The way he approaches sequels is one-third proven, one-third improved, and one-third new."

not everything needs to be innovative. in fact, more time should be spent improving on what is already out there as there is plenty of room for improvement. a lot of "innovation" simply distracts you from the failings in other areas.

as for Ghost, i'd love to see it again, but i'm not holding my breath on that one.

I dunno. Like, with SC2 being basically the same game with new units... it just seems kind of depressing in the context of the much more fun and friendly Company of Heroes.
That game can be excused by pointing to the Korean audience, I suppose, but still it's a little disappointing.

I will say though, the extremely slow burn makes the games more important than say, the next Activision games. I just wonder if Blizzard can even make anything new at this point. Do an MMO, you kill WoW. Can't do another RTS other than SC or WC... I guess we'll see if Diablo does anything different. But if it doesn't, I wonder why I wouldn't play the free Mythos, which essentially does the Diablo thing but for free.

To the contrary, I think when D3 ships Mythos will die a fast and unfortunate death. Lucky for them, that won't be for a while ;)

Eh, maybe. I just wonder if it's that hardcore gaming market for Diablo. Mythos is free and runs on any computer and, at the very least, does everything that Diablo 2 and Titan Quest did.
Of course, since I'm not a fan of ARPGs, maybe I'm underestimating the brand.

Such because its the same type of game doesn't mean they do everything the same, cause they don't. For all the times I've gone back to Diablo 2 (and almost all of those times was to just spam frozen orb) I played Mythos for a few days and never went back to it and didn't even finish the Titan Quest demo.

What it really comes down to is again that Blizzard rarely innovates, but instead takes existing gameplay mechanics and spends a significant amount of time on refinement and balance. Really your line of thinking only holds true if all games in the same genre are created equally... which, of course, they aren't. There's been a "gap" for Diablo-like gameplay for a long while now that hasn't been filled by anything that works as well. Lots of people were hoping Hellgate London will fill that niche, but that didn't work out...

Yeah, my very first reaction when I saw the gameplay video was, "Oh gawd they made Diablo look like WoW!" My brother who showed me the video disagreed with me though, so I'm glad to hear someone else make that observation. I still liked everything else I saw, and the gameplay looked like it would be a lot of fun. I really can't wait to see what the sorceress and druid will look like (I sure hope they have those classes). I was especially excited that it looked like there would be male and female versions of all the classes. I've never liked playing male characters in games because I'm not male, so that really limited my choices in Diablo II.
