North Pole ice completely vanishes this year?

What are the odds?

For the first time in modern history, the North Pole may be iceless this summer. Scientists say it's an even bet that sea ice in the region will completely disappear in the next few months, perhaps as soon as August.
Ice at the North Pole quickly and significantly melted away last year, and that may be causing further melting this summer. Scientists say the disappearance of long-term and thicker ice formed over the years has disappeared. Now, most of the ice that's left is seasonal ice, which melts away much more quickly during warm weather.
"This year there is a lot of young ice. There's always some, but this year there's a lot," Andy Mahoney, a researcher at the University of Colorado's National Snow and Ice Data Center, told CTV.ca.
Satellite observations indicate the ice remaining at the poles is melting faster than last year's rate, which was already a record year for Arctic ice loss. Scientists say whether or not the ice melts completely, this year's northern melt is yet another example of the impact that global warming is having on the planet's environment...

If all the ice has melted away why havn't the sea levels risen yet?

North Pole melting = Ice cubes already in the water melting

So there won't be any sudden dramatic change but this is a serious warning sign predicted by scientists.

While Greenland and South Pole ice sits on top of land not water
Greenland melting or Antarctica melting = cubes Not in water suddenly get added to the volume of our sea
(say goodbye to all world property near sea-level.)

If you live far inland or in mountainous area then lucky for you. Your property has increased in value by 200% ;)
but if you live near water, then your house is probably going to join the Ocean :(

Well, maybe our great great grand children's homes.

Things like crops and animals will be affected long before any flash flood from melting ice drowns some one.

That's so strange. Especially after the record ice just a few months ago:

Deep freeze in western Greenland

Ice between Canada and SW Greenland: highest level in 15 years.

Or even this:
Compared to the May 2007 value of 0.199°C we find a 12 month ∆T is -.379°C. But even more impressive is the change since the last big peak in global temperature in January 2007 at 0.594°C, giving a 16 month ∆T of -0.774°C which is equal in magnitude to the generally agreed upon “global warming signal” of the last 100 years.
With so much conflicting "scientific" data you have to wonder what is really what.

Considering that has nothing to do with perennial ice cover in the Arctic, I'm wondering why you posted it. Ice in that part is seasonal, so the increase reflects the fact that the winter in that part of the world was a bit colder than it has been recently (although still above average).

If it has completely "undone" global warming, why was May the 8th warmest on record, and the whole spring the 7th warmest? Even January, with its "huge drop," was still above average. The reason there was such a big year-to-year drop, despite this January still being warmer than average, was because last January smashed temperature records for that month. I mean, even the graph they show right below the text indicates that the "low" temperature is still warmer than most winters in the 1980s. So I suspect it has more to do with your selective agreement and lack of understanding of the science than actual "conflicting scientific data."

As for the Arctic sea ice, it's actually somewhat frightening how fast things are accelerating - from predictions of ice-free in 2050 just a few years ago, to 2030 to now possibly as early as 5 years from now (the ice-free pole this year is more symbolic and there will still be sea ice). I knew that some IPCC predictions were already watered down by compromise, but I wonder what more we have to look forward to with melting in Greenland and sea level rise.

Because it's a crock that the sea levels will rise, that's why.

Also, if the ice is in "cold" water, how can it melt if the air temperature is rising? Put ice in warm water and it will melt. There are several theories out there that there's a warm water current that shifts continuously and could be causing the polar ice to melt and as such have an affect on weather patterns.

I still don't see why people buy into the junk science of manmade climate change when it's been proven that the temperature of the earth has been rising and falling for millions of years.

But if the global temperature is going up for natural reasons, then the sea level will rise. Your two statements above don't go together.

The level of water does NOT change as the result of flosting ice melting in it. THIS is the fact certain people need to get a grip on.

This has been said numerous time both here and in the TNZ version. I think most people have "gotten" that and even "gotten" that in the Northern Winter ice re-forms up there.

No, apparently not from the last couple of comments.

I'm still looking for the proof global warming exists or doesn't exist. I was beginning to become a believer in global warming until I came upon the argument that the world has actually been cooling the last ten years since the last sunspot cycle. Is this true?
