Star Trek Convention Cancelled DURING Event

Looks like just the first two for now (the ones due at the beginning of July).

Of the 20 scheduled as of a few days ago, fully half have already been canceled. Of the remaining ones still listed, what I'm hearing is it's only a matter of time before this completely implodes.

Oh, and I found this Emperor Jackass's website, and I truly LOVE the "About Me" section. This is what he says about himself:

"All across the country he has a reputation of zero tolerance for stupidity or incompetence."

A mirror, he has not seen.

Well, I still hold out hope that they can put on a few of their cons just to do it. I'd really like to see more affordable conventions to ratchet up the competition for Creation.
And at least they didn't wait until the event was in the middle of a Q&A forum to close it. I have a reasonable expectation of getting a refund.

It's sad to see any small con get shut down like this. It's even sadder that a fan would trumpet its failure. This seems to send the message that the only conventions that can succeed are ones put on by larger organizations like Creation, which has long since become the WalMart of Trek conventions.

From what what understand of Jumpcon it was started by a scifi fan in New Hampshire who had recently came into alot of money (inheritance I think, not sure) and wanted to not only do a con but a bunch of them. Two early problems were noticed right away, first thay had way to many guests booked for each one and they had guests that demanded alot of money also, so it was hard to see how they could make any money at all given all the guest costs and not be in the red. The second thing was bad geopraphical guest scheduling, they would have alot of the same guests at the Boston con then a month later at the Conneticut con, so you are hurting your sales by having them to close in area and in time.

Weel, again as with any other account, that is his accounting for events. I'm not believing a word coming out of anyone in regards to this; simply because we don't have access to objective information in order to judge the reality behind the failure.

There wasn't any part of his interview that screamed bullshit to me. It just sounds like a guy who never did a con before who is taking on the responsability that he rightly should for the failure of this event.

Oh please, if I wanted his head on a platter I wouldn't be more interest in the facts of the matter over everyone's, not just his, personal BS stories on who's to blame. Every take is going to be slanted one way or the other, and it's all going to have a measure of bullshit to it.

Accually if SeerSGB wanted Tim's head all he would have to do is drive a few miles to his house and get it . lol

Yeah, it does appear they've canceled quite a few of the events, and that is a good thing, IMO.

They had way too many scheduled -- their calendar was filled non-stop every weekend until the end of the year (I think they might have been taking Thanksgiving and Christmas weekends off). Staff and fan burnout would have been pretty bad. And with the duplication of too many actors and the close proximity between some events, they were actually competing with themselves.

Looks to me like the experience the new staff members bring to the table has paid off. I'm disappointed of course that Stamford is off, but I do think this is better and more likely to help Jumpcon have a longer, healthier run.

I hope so, anyway.
Meanwhile, I have Vegas to look forward to. (probably be my first and last Creation event, especially if Jumpcon succeeds. If not, there's always Vulkon and Shore Leave!)

And the point of bringing up that outdated and erroneous info was?

Considering that it doesn't change the fact that no one is going to tell the whole truth on the matter, and the ones that are telling the truth aren't going to be telling a unbiased version of events.

The truth is pretty easy. Tim bit off a bit more than he could chew. I doubt there was malice involved.

He's not the first to screw up a convention and he's not the last. Hopefully, he'll take a lesson from this and not organize stuff in the future, unless he learns how to do it properly. Reading this and about other con failures, I know that I would never want to tackle this kind of thing. I have a new appreciation for those who pull off successful cons.

I do feel very sorry for the fans who came expecting a fun convention. And double that if they spend lots of money by having to fly in for it.

Hopefully, he'll take a lesson from this and not organize stuff in the future, unless he learns how to do it properly.

Actually, I don't think he'll learn anything from this. Next time he gets a "great idea" he'll just run with it. I just hope the people who went along for the ride -- family members/staff/volunteers who were left in Dallas holding the bag -- learn their lesson and refuse to play next time.

We were particularly disturbed by this Con, even though we had decided not to go, last-minute.

We live North East of Dallas, and the Con, held at a Hotel West of the airport, would have been a good hour's drive for us, each way. It was $30 for a pass. So, we'd have been out $60, plus two hours' driving time, just to get there.

We were excited about the guests.Billingsley, Trineer and Hatch, for starters, but Callis and Benedict especially. We planned to tell Dirk Benedict
we'd watched him on Big Brother Celebrity, UK, and call him "Duck."

Since we were going to drop in, to have driven out there Saturday morning, paid our money and had it all cancelled an hour or two later... we would have been incensed. And we only would have driven from an hour away, not flown in and secured a hotel room.

We'd been monitoring the site for weeks. All the top-level passes, the $600 Gold-plated Meal-with-the-Stars, jump-to-the-line-front tickets were all sold...

It's been a long, long time since I went to a Major Con (1982) and this basically means I likely won't, again, just the locals that scifiexpo.com put on.

Why do I always find the interesting threads after they quiet down?

If that's the case, then on the second Vadercast video, John Billingsley said to contact him through his website, mention you were at this convention, you don't like how you've been treated, you haven't got your money back and mention that this needs to get to John and he said they'll get it to him and he'll do what he can to help you and anyone else in this sorry, sad situation out.
