Something at Comic-Con - This rocks

Re: Nothing at Comic-Con - This sucks

I imagine this translates into "we don't have anything to show that we think would produce a real positive buzz."

(shaking his head) How can that be? Paramount had a huge presence at last year's Con. Hell, that's where Nimoy and Quinto made their first public appearance together. I'm floored.

I don't know...I would have been satisfied with a panel of Abrams, Kurtzman, Orci, Scott Chambliss, and maybe an actor -- Bana, Pine, or Urban this time -- and all they would've needed to bring with them were some production stills showing some sets, a better shot of the Enterprise, and stills of some actors in uniform. I'm sure they have those materials ready to be viewed...or maybe that is more than Abrams wants to reveal.

a lot of people would have been happy with that.
you would think they would have learned after ironman how much comicon could help.

Re: Nothing at Comic-Con - This sucks

Apparently Paramount has suddenly done a 180, according to an update to the original linked post:

UPDATE: Apparently this report has caused Paramount to change its mind about what it will do at Comic-Con. Paramount spokesman Mike Vollman just called me to say: "We have a vibrant and exciting schedule of activities planned for Comic-Con." The studio will be unveiling a number of marketing materials on these pics.

This whole thing just strikes me as pretty odd.

Is Comic-Con over? I really don't follow it but I'm wondering if they are saving something for a surprize on its last day. If it's over, then they missed a great opportunity.

was the whole thing a fishing expedition to see if there was interest

No longer than the lead time for "Iron Man."

I imagine this translates into "we don't have anything to show that we think would produce a real positive buzz."
Of course, Iron Man was also a comics property. Star Trek isn't. So, it made sense to promote Iron Man at SDCC. :)

And yes, I realize that SDCC is outgrowing the CC part of its name. Which may be good for the convention as a whole, but bad for the comics fandom.

You mean like more pictures of dirty shuttles?

The (tiny) optimist in me would say this is nothing. It's still almost a year until the movie. And, it's illogical to acknowledge as some do that the Trek fanbase has shrunk to be too small to support a major box office hit on its own, then also say that it's time to start some real buzz in fandom. I mean, the "average movie goer" (AMG) probably knows beans about Comic-Con let alone pays attention to it. And, why would the AMG be clammoring for cast photos and a glimpse of the Enterprise this far out from release?

Re: Nothing at Comic-Con - This sucks

They could have some dudes dressed up in costumes from the movie, and give away another poster with the logo on it.

Re: Nothing at Comic-Con - This sucks

It seems like Paramount is more secretive of Star Trek than other things.

Like the G.I. Joe movie is even further away yet we've seen tons of photos of the cast and the cast in costumes and everything, but nothing like that for Trek.

Re: Nothing at Comic-Con - This sucks

Paramount. Learning from past success is a good thing. Just look at, oh I don't know...THIS YEAR for an example.

Here's hoping for next year.

The more tight-lipped Paramount is, the more buzz they generate.
...and now the call from Vollman to say we ARE doing something after all...
Paramount may be doing the right thing in "holding out". Never has a studio generated so much buzz for a movie by doing NOTHING... hmmm... playin' us like a fiddle. :rommie::guffaw::rommie::guffaw:

Re: Nothing at Comic-Con - This sucks

I think the second we see the cast in uniform its gonna be a pretty big deal.

Don't forget these recastings are pretty controversial

Attendance at Comic-Con extends way, way beyond "Star Trek" fandom, and the media coverage certainly does.

When people talk about the studio's attempts to attract a "new audience" and create new fandom for Trek beyond the traditional base, one would expect that their plan is not to try to snatch millions of "Sex And The City" and Green Bay Packers fans off of the streets at random and reprogram them. The place to start is, in fact, with all of the young geeks and fans of various sf/fantasy properties who have never had any particular interest in Trek but who line up and empty their pockets for movie tickets and all kinds of merchandise related to other franchises every summer. "If you liked Transformers/Iron Man/Star Wars etc you'll probably like this movie too."
